Who Are They?

The Death Knight was a terrible weapon of the Scourge, a creature raised from noble flesh to rend and destroy that which they once loved. Yet, in the end, the Death Knights of Acherus Hold are but foot-soldiers, incomplete and weak.

Many Death Knights, upon being set free, have turned their minds to their own inherent weaknesses. To better serve the Ebon Blade and utilize their powers, many have embarked on strengthening themselves and their dark powers. From this resolve was born the Tormentors, a race of Death Knights who –after undergoing trials and miseries- have emerged stronger and more vile.

Who Likes Them?

A Death Knight is a hated and shunned creature, scorned by the world for what they have done. As nothing more then more powerful versions of a Death Knight, Tormentors are loathed by the Night Elves and Tauren and kept at arm's length by most other races, sans the Forsaken.

Strengths

  • Might of Acherus

The Shadow coursing through their bodies strengthens them, granting them increased physical combat prowess and higher health points.

  • Shadow Mastery

The Tormentor has a mastery over Shadow, able to cast high-level spells and abilities using shadow without fatiguing themselves. They also have a natural resistance to Shadow attacks against them.

  • Rune Mastery

A Tormentor gains combat bonuses while wielding weapons etched with runes.

  • Pale Horse

A Tormentor pours Shadow energy into their Death Charger, giving the mount increased speed.

  • Unliving

The process to become a Tormentor turns them undead, robbing them of the need to sleep, eat or breathe. They no longer feel pain.

Weaknesses

  • Vile

A Tormentor, now undead and coursing with Shadow energy, is now doubly harmed by Light and Holy spells.

  • Unliving

The process to become a tormentor infuses the target with so much Shadow energy that their body ‘dies'. They now smell, exude a necrotic aura and have signs of visible necrosis.

  • The Hunger

The process to become a Tormentor exacerbates the Death Knight's hunger to cause pain. If they do not draw blood or cause pain every three days they fall into The Madness, where they will randomly attack a target with an insane passion, only stopping when they have caused enough pain to sate their hunger or if they are knocked out.

  • Empty Handed

If a Tormentor is not wielding a rune-etched weapon they will receive no benefits in combat.

Skills and Abilities

  • Vile Strike

A Tormentor covers their weapon in corruptive shadow magic. Their weapons now cause necrosis when they successfully hit a living target, making the flesh rot and darken for double damage.

  • Gorge

A Tormentor can cast this spell once during a fight. A tendril of shadow stretches between the Tormentor and the target. If successful, the Death Knight will be healed by as many injuries the target received in the fight (How many HPs lost). This does not heal the target.

  • Improved Death Grip

The Tormentor's Death Grip now can be manipulated with greater dexterity. Through concentration, they can manipulate the shadow around a small to medium sized object or person. They can toss the object, draw it to them or draw themselves to it.

  • Damper

The Tormentor can cast a medium AoE spell that weakens, not stops, all magic, even his own and his allies, in a chosen area. The spell can be dispelled at will by the Tormentor but requires him to be in the immediate area for him to maintain it.

  • Death Gate

The Tormentor can now, by constructing a Death Gate and passing through it, teleport themselves to any previously-visited location in Azeroth by quickly traveling through the Shadow Plane.

  • Terror Strike

The Tormentor, covering their blade in shadow magic, can once per combat strike a target, causing a magical fear to grip their mind. The target is compelled to flee from the fight, no matter what strength or resistance they may have. They cannot be stopped from fleeing.

  • Shadow Mastery

A Tormentor's unconventional grasp on the use of Shadow and Corruption magic allows them to craft new, unique spells and enchantments from those two schools. (Contact a GM with your ideas for approval!)

Training Outline

A Death Knight must first be a member of the Ebon Blade before becoming a Tormentor. Only this illustrious and powerful organization holds the keys to obtaining higher power. A rogue Death Knight will be unable to complete the trial on his own and will die in the attempt, torn apart by the legions of the Shadow Plane.

The next step is to receive instruction from a high-ranking member of the Ebon Blade. This instructor does not need to be a tormentor, simply someone who is well accustomed to the shadow Plane and the magic a Death Knight wields. Once the Aspirant has suitable wooed the teacher, they will receive instruction on what they must do.

The teacher will inform the Aspirant that they must cross into the Shadow Plane and remain there for a month, where they will be cut off from the outside world and be forced to survive. Within the Shadow Plane the Death Knight must hone their skills, learn to master shadow and survive to escape another day. Once the teacher has given the Aspirant a brief lesson on what to expect and what to do, they will open a portal and usher the knight through.

The Shadow Plane is a carbon copy of Azeroth. All physical, Titan-made topography is exactly the same in the Shadow Plane. Zones are located in the same areas, lakes, forests and mountains are identical and any natural disaster or destruction, like the Blasted Land's formation, is present as well. However, all color in the Shadow Plane is muted and deadened, making the place grey and bleak. All man-made towns, villages or settlements are run down and ruined. The place is completely populated by undead animals, spirits and hideous necromantic abominations.

While in the Shadow Plane the Death Knight must survive for a month. They will battle shades, travel the world and study the Shadow that twirls and twists in this world. Some spirits in the land are gentle, and will impart wisdom and magic relevant to shadow and Corruption to them once a service or kindness has been rendered.

After the Death Knight has strengthened their bodies in battle and their minds in studying from these ghastly apparitions, they will force their way back into the mortal realm. Once back through, the Tormentor will approach their once teacher and claim the title of Tormentor.

Active Tormentors

Currently there are no active Tormentors, so any applicants would have to create an NPC for the training.
