Matthias loves his new undeath. His power motivates him, and increasing that power is his goal in unlife. Matthias does not ignore his Hunger and preys upon those who venture too far from settlements or those who he dislikes and lures out into the wilds. Matthias is no nonsensical and humorless, taking everything seriously and putting down taunts or insults with threats and force. Bullies immediately draw his hatred and he will scheme to end their pathetic lives. Matthias never kills children nor does he kill pregnant women. He views the living as lower-class citizens and he believes himself above them. Matthias has a particular fondness towards mice and rats, as he had a pet mouse as a boy. He also enjoys good, warm bread. Open flames and light-users make Matthias uncomfortable and seeks to put out flames or remove himself from the company of light-users whenever he can.

History

Matthias Renault was born the eldest of three siblings, the first son of Martin and Rose Renault in a military clinic in Lordaeron. There was much anticipation for Matthias' birth, his father was eager to have a son befitting of his love and compassion. A son who would be fit and strong, like his father before him. Unfortunately for Martin and truly Matthias, baby Matthias was born a sickly child, and an albino at that. After the Second War, at the age of four, and after the rebuilding of Stratholme, his family relocated to the new housing available there, where they opened a bakery. They never partook of the grain they were shipped by the government, only taking what was left over and storing it for themselves. Having been born so different, Matthias was the subject of ridicule and childhood torment while he was growing up. Matthias would run home crying, covered in scrapes after being beaten by local boys, seeking his father to divvy out justice to their households; only to be met with more beatings from his father when he got home, due to Matthias, "Actin' like a girl and not kickin' their asses". As his father's least favorite, Matthias bore the brunt of his father's drunken tirades and beatings. His mother and siblings stood by idly never doing a thing to stop Martin.

Matthias grew to hate his father for beating him and his mother for never saying a word when his father beat him. He managed to hold a tenuous friendship with his younger sister, Katarina-- though that friendship never lasted outside of the house, and she would make fun of him in public in order to maintain her own reputation. The youngest brother of the three, Reuben was really Matthias' only real friend. Sweet little Reuben loved Matthias dearly, and looked up to him. However, Matthias used Reuben as an outlet for his pain and anger, viewing Reuben as everything Matthias was supposed to be: his father's favorite, a strong, capable child, the popular kid around his neighborhood, the goody-two-shoes angel that could not do wrong.

Matthias endured this veritable hell until the age of eighteen. At this age, he was recruited into the Lordaeron military, eager to leave behind Stratholme and his childhood bullies that inhabited it, and perhaps to finally make his father proud of him. At the time that Matthias completed his basic training, a task force was forming in order to investigate the recent plague that was occurring in Lordaeron. Matthias signed on, preferring action to guard duty.

Matthias was placed under the command of Prince Arthas Menethil of Lordaeron. Matthias instantly latched onto is commander as an idol, and he admired Arthas' conviction with which Arthas did things and found Arthas to be valorous and strong. He envied Arthas, and sought to model himself after the Prince.

Matthias was a good soldier, and throughout the campaign it seemed with every undead he cleaved in twain, he grew stronger. About six months in, Matthias was just as broad as any other soldier in Lordaeron, ending taunts with his fists, rather than by running away.

Matthias' true turning point came at the Culling of Stratholme. When Arthas asked for soldiers to stand by him Matthias was one of the first to come to his side, eager to show his childhood bullies his transformation. Matthias slaughtered them, cutting down his enemies and antagonists with glee, reveling in the bloodshed. At some point during the "battle" Matthias found himself at his old home and with a cold heart, went about to the task at hand.

Matthias kicked in the door with heavy steel plated boots and began searching for his father. Matthias saw something out of the corner of his eye, turning in time to receive a slash across the face from his father's blade. Little bit more than a scratch, blood began to seep from his right ear to his chin. Matthias recoiled in pain and drew his own blade. Martin and Matthias fought for a few minutes, cursing each other the entire time. Matthias, claiming that he only wished to please his father, and his father all the while calling him a monster. Matthias lost control and became overcome with a blood rage. He remembered his father had a bad leg, a left over war wound from an Orc Grunt in the Second War. Matthias swept his fathers leg with his own, knocking Martin to the floor and stabbed down into his father's prone body. With one last breath, his father's life was ended. Matthias turned to search for the rest of his family, seeing his mother at the top of the stairs, horrified. Matthias tried to go to her, and comfort her, saying he was sorry, that he didn't mean for it to end this way. But she would have none of it, hysterical, Rose ran out of the house, shoving her way past Matthias into the street outside where she was overwhelmed by the undead running rampant in the streets. With his parents slain, Matthias' thoughts turned to his siblings. He ran upstairs, throwing open the door to little Reuben's room, and found him cowering in a corner. Matthias looked upon him and in his heart knew that he could never harm his little brother. Matthias sheathed his blade and went to Reuben, sweeping him up in his arms. The twelve year-old boy was scared and trembling. Short on time, Matthias asked of Reuben where their sister was. Reuben hadn't a clue. Matthias trusted Katarina to be resourceful enough to save herself, so he fled.

Matthias could not care for Reuben, as he had to return to Arthas and his men. Matthias went to the only place he knew, Light's Hope Chapel. Reuben left Matthias in the care of the priests and paladins that lived there at the time. Trusting that their power would keep his little brother safe.

Matthias returned to his garrison, claiming to have been separated in the chaos of the battle and having fought his way all the way back. It was shortly made known that they would be going north to the Crown of the World in order to strike Mal'Ganis where he lived.

While in Northrend Matthias continued to follow orders and never questioned Arthas' leadership. Matthias filled his position perfectly, up until he was left in charge of a small group of men while Arthas and Muradin Bronzebeard went off to retrieve Frostmourne. Cocky and looking forward to the glory of the assault on Mal'Ganis' home base. Unfortunately for Matthias, he was left to defend his barracks while Arthas carried Frostmourne into battle for the first time. After the battle Arthas left Matthias and his other men for dead. Most of the men died, yet Matthias lived. Barely surviving and returning home to Lordaeron much later than Arthas.

Matthias came home to a land in turmoil. King Terenas Menethil had been slain by his own son, a son who now fought for the very same forces he had been trying to destroy. Undead roamed the lands of Lordaeron and the Knights of the Silver Hand had been annihilated.

Matthias tried to make his way to Light's Hope Chapel to once again be with his brother, but fate had other plans. During his travels, Matthias had been set upon by the Scourge more than once but typically in numbers Matthias had been able to dead with. However, one fatefully sundown Matthias had a run in with a necromancer of the Scourge, a commander of twelve ghouls. Matthias could not withstand the combined might of both the ghouls and the necromancer's dark magics. Matthias fell, and was resurrected as a ghoul, himself.

Matthias' can not remember what he did as a ghoul though he is sure it was terrible. In reality, he ended up aiding in the siege of Dalaran and helped to protect Kel'Thuzad while he opened the Dark Portal for Archimonde. Shortly afterwards, Matthias regained his own consciousness once more, but was at first horrified at what he had become. He could no longer taste his food, nor smell any fragrances. His sense of touch was diluted as if he were constantly wearing armor. But Matthias also noticed that he no longer grew tired, and he didn't need to eat or drink. He never grew tired by intense physical exercise. He felt no pain, no sorrow, no anger. In a way, to him, it was a blessing just as much as it were a curse.

Soon, Matthias heard of other undead who had regained their own will. He rallied to their cause and took up arms in the name of Sylvanas Windrunner. He aided in the civil war against the dreadlords, after Varimathras joined the Forsaken. After the war Matthias took up residence within the Undercity of Lordaeron working as a deathguard outside of the city when needed.

After four years of security detail for the Forsaken military, word spread of a part of the Scarlet Crusade breaking off and forming the Argent Dawn, taking up residence in Light's Hope Chapel in the Eastern Plaguelands. Matthias was intrigued by this development, and wished to know what happened to his brother, whom he left at Light's Hope Chapel. Two years pass and finally, Matthias is able to set forth on his endeavor. Eager and curious, Matthias acquired leave time from the Forsaken military and set off for Light's Hope one more time in hopes of finally reuniting with his brother.

As luck would have it though, Matthias was once again set upon by Scourge forces in Eastern Plaguelands. Matthias fought valiantly, but in the end, fell once more. However, the Scourge was not done with him. Matthias' body was taken to Acherus and raised as a Death Knight. His mind was damaged by this second resurrection, causing him to forget his time as a Forsaken all the way to the battle against Mal'Ganis. Matthias reveled in his resurrection, praising Arthas, his savior, for giving him life once more and immense power. Matthias happily slew the Scarlet Crusaders of the Scarlet Enclave. Finally, Matthias was ordered to attack Light's Hope Chapel alongside the other Death Knights of Acherus. During the battle Matthias heard a familiar voice, the voice of his brother, Reuben. Still heavily under control by the Lich King, Matthias fought his way to Reuben, finding him in the heat of battle, a full-fledged paladin of the Argent Dawn. Matthias charged his brother, but just as he did, Tirion Fordring ended the battle, shattering the Lich King's hold over him.

Darion Morgraine and Tirion Fordring defeated the Lich King with the help of the one thousand light-user corpses interred underneath Light's Hope Chapel. Matthias played along with the Ebon Blade and fought to liberate Acherus from the Scourge. Once freed, Matthias returned to Icecrown once again to stand by his master. After all, Arthas gave him this dark blessing and he intended to serve Arthas until he died, again that is.

Matthias continued to work as an agent of the Scourge up until Arthas' death. Without his leader Matthias was unsure of what to do with himself. He decided that trying to join the ranks of the Forsaken was probably his best bet, as they were the only ones who would take him in in his current condition. Matthias managed to convince them that through some strange twist of fate, his connection to the Lich King only ended through the Lich King's demise. Recently, Matthias has slowly been receiving fragments of memories from his time as a Forsaken Deathguard.

Matthias now seeks to further his political power as well as find the bits of his past he has forgotten about his time as a Forsaken. He is now working as an agent for the Forsaken and is looking to join the Black Harvest in order to establish a land safe for those of unlife.
