History

Zughar was born into the Thunderlord Clan in present day Blade’s Edge Mountains on Draenor. The family lived in a simple hut with the rest of the clansmen. This orc was born the youngest son of three, but older than his only sister. He, like his brothers were big, even as kids.

The orc's childhood was fairly simple. He would help his father, Drughar, skin and gut whatever animal his father brought to the hut. When he wasn't helping skin and tan hides with his father, he was learning the ways of the hunt. His father wanted to make sure his children would not shame his family by not passing their Om'riggor.

Zughar took to his training well and by the time of his twentieth birthday, he felt ready for his trial. Taking only a spear he ventures off into the wilds to find a raptor. Due his father's training, finding the tracks to a beast wasn't hard. Upon following the tracks for what seems like hours he finds a large raptor. The orc hid himself and waited for the perfect moment to charge. He got his chance when the raptor stopped to drink. Zughar charged forward, spear in hand. The beast fell to Zughar and the Orc smeared the blood of the raptor on his face before heading back to his village, the raptor's head in his clutches.

Zughar returned victoriously, being accepted as valued member of the Clan. His father, proud of his achievement presented his son with a large bone axe, made from the various animals that his father hunted.

The Orc's life was simple from then on, he left with his family to hunt for food. He continued to turn the hides into cloaks for light armor. One day on a hunt like any other day, Zughar ran crossed paths with an Ogre. Zughar, hearing stories about how his father and his father before him would never back down from a fight with these brutes, wanted to keep the tradition alive and charged the Ogre. The battle was tough, with Zughar taking many of hits to his chest and arms. However, he survived. The same couldn't be said for the Ogre.

Zughar returned home after finishing his hunt and told about the encounter to his father. The older Orc swelled proud to hear of his son following in the family footsteps. That night, Zughar and his father spent all night talking about the family's past experiences with Ogres. He told Zughar that his father, his father before him, and the father before him always wished to leave this life knowing they killed a Mountain Gronn, however none of them were able to accomplish such task.

His father turned to Zughar and told him, "I want to leave this life knowing I slew a Mountain Gronn, to bring honor to my father." That talk stuck with Zughar and he wanted to help his father. For the next year Zughar would rise from bed before the sun was out and complete his hunt. Once he was done he trained, he practiced with his axe until his arms hurt, and then he kept training. He would run until he threw up, then keep running so he can increase his endurance and stamina during battle. He did not want to get exhausted during a fight with such a beast.

A year finally passed. Zughar felt that he grew both in strength and skill. He went to his father and asked him to join a War-band to slay a Mountain Gronn. The older Orc gladly accepted. Filling the rest of the War-band wasn't hard by any means, many clansmen wished to find glory on the battlefield, along with Zughar's brothers. The War-band set off as soon as the thaw had left the earth, hunting for a Gronn. The War-band quickly found the tracks of a gronn, spending the next few days following the tracks to find the Gronn. Eventually, they reached the end of the tracks. The Warband stood in a valley, looking for the Gronn. Just before the Warband turned around to head back, a boulder fell from the sky and fell onto an Orc, destroying him. The Gronn roared and ran down the mountain towards the Warband.

The Warband sprang into action, hurling their spears and launching their arrows at the Gronn. A few braver Orcs, like Zughar's father, pulled their axes out and ran directly at the Gronn. Aside from the few spears that managed to pierce the stone like skin, they were largely ineffective. Some unlucky Orcs were slaughtered outright by the Gronn's fists and boulders. Drughar however was lucky to survive the initial assault and managed to slam his axe against the Mountain Gronn's ankle, drawing blood.

With a commanding shout, Drughar ordered the Warband to fall-back and they followed. The Orcs readied their ranged weapons and launched a volley aimed for the vulnerable eye. This Gronn wasn't stupid, bringing his arm up to protect the one eye. The Gronn did exactly what the Drughar wanted. Drawing his axe he ordered the Warband to charge! The attack was a success, the Orcs managing to get in free blows to the Gronn's legs, slashing away at the skin. The giant roared out in pain, swinging his mighty fists in rage. The slower Orcs who didn't get out of the way in time were swiftly crushed.

Drughar ordered his Orcs to send another volley of spears and arrows. The ancestor's must have smiled upon the Warband, because a lone spear impaled the Gronn's one eye. In a rage the Gronn roared out and started stomping the ground with his feet, shaking the ground below the Orcs. With this rage induced fit, the Gronn wasn't able to stomp any of the Orcs, but when he started slamming his fists wildly? The Warband took a beating, many clansmen being pounded into paste. Drughar raised his axe and roared a command to charge the Gronn. The Orcs roared out in return as they charge the giant, they maneuvered under and behind the Gronn. Using their axes and spears, the slammed and pierced the back of Gronn's legs, forcing the giant to tumble forward. The head of the Gronn lands directly on the large boulder he initially threw down at the Warband, with the boulder literally exploding from the force. Due to the angle of his fall, the Gronn landed on his left arm

Drughar let out a cheer as he believed the Gronn died since it wasn't moving. Drugar walked up to the Gronn, a smile on his face from his victory. He waved over his son Zughar, "My son, because of you. I have finally killed a Gronn." The ancestor's smile must have turned from a smile into a sneer, because Drughar was suddenly crushed by Gronn's hand. The slowly bleeding out and blinded Gronn was still fighting and this fact drew out Zughar's rage. In his newly found rage, Zughar lifted his axe and continuously chopped away at the dying Gronn, only stopping to dodge the wild swings of the arm.

The bone axe shattered in his hands, shards of bone flew into Zughar's body. One embedding itself in right eye. The rage filled Orc couldn't think of pain now, he grabbed his father's more sturdy axe and continued his fight. The Warband stood behind Zughar and watched as he chopped away at the most likely already dead Gronn, his two brothers looked back at each other wanting to help Zughar finish off the Gronn, but didn't. They believed Zughar wanted to unleash his fury upon the Gronn for knowing he was ultimately responsible for Drughar's death. The giant was infact dead, he died around the time Zughar's bone axe shattered, succumbed to the various wounds inflicted by Zughar and the War-band. Zughar eventually exhausted himself and collapsed.

Zughar would eventually wake up at the camp made by the Warband. He was initially shocked at the loss of his right eye. His wounds were already tended to. They stayed in the camp for a day, making sure the Wa-rband could recuperate before they would make the trip back to Thunderlord Stronghold. Before Zughar and the Warband left, he took his father's axe, a weapon he has decided to use himself and removes the head of Gronn. Once the head was removed, he wrapped the ropes around the head and fastened it to a few worgs. Zughar and the War-band returned to the Thunderlord Stronghold.

Zughar spends the next month essentially mopping, while others were awed that he came back with the head of a Gronn, he wasn't proud. How could he be? He brought his father out to slay a Gronn, but his father had died before it was actually killed.

One fateful night, Zughar had a dream. In his dream, Drughar spoke to him. He told his son how proud he was that his son managed to slay a Gronn. Zughar was confused by this, he believed that his father would be angry, dying before he could fulfill the task -his- father couldn't complete. Drughar simply told him, through his son's actions, he lived out his dream through his son. Zughar jolted awake, he knew what he must do. He was going to bring honor to his forefathers and slay a Gronn for his grandfather, then for his great-grandfather and so on.

Zughar no longer mopped around the village, no...he was determined. His old routine started up again, rise early in the morning to complete his hunt then he would train, he would learn everything he could about Gronn before he would attempt another attack. When he told his family what he intends to do, they supported his goal. What Zughar would do for the next two years is train and learn. He would practice his axe-manship, learning how to use his father's weapon to the fullest of his ability. He would track and observe Gronn, learning their weaknesses and strengths. During these years, he would speak to the surving members of the War-band and ask them to join him for more Gronn slaying. Most declined the offer, knowing that many died the first time. However, many accepted the call for more glory. Zughar urged the members who wished to join to take the time to train and learn all they can to increase their chances of victory, the War-band agreed to train.

It was time, the War-band was ready for to find and kill another Mountain Gronn. This time they brought stronger weapons and brought implements. The size of the War-band was also larger, other members bringing in their friends along. The War-band returned to the valley where they fought the first Gronn after getting word that another Mountain Gronn has taken up the valley as his home. The War-band started setting up trap, down the entrance to the valley. The Orcs started digging a large pit, filling it large spikes and spears. Once that was done they covered the hole with cloth and made it look like the soil with dirt.

Once the pit was finished, a small, agile group of Orcs and Worgs was sent into the hills to find and coax the Gronn down the hill, into the pit. The rest of the orcs picked up around their pit and made sure that the Gronn would never know they were there. Zughar, along with his brothers, took off with the team of Worg riders. By the time they found the Gronn and returned to where the camp was, it was night and everything was cleared. Despite this, the trap went off without a hitch... other than the fact that the Gronn was too large for the pit. As the Gronn began to clamber out of the pit, Zughar ordered his band forward to stop the Gronn from climbing.

Like they planned in advance, the Orcs quickly grabbed bundles of rope attacked to large stakes and spears. Zughar grabbed one bundle himself and set off to bind the limbs to the ground by stabbing the stakes into the soil after crossing rope over the Gronn. The Gronn wasn't going to be taken down without a fight. Sporadically throughout the binding process the giant would get an arm free and smash an Orc into the soil. Zughar and his brother's would spring into action and quickly get the binding down again while other members of the War-band stab away at the sides of the Gronn.

Eventually the Gronn would slow down in his thrashing, the blood loss taking its toll on the massive monster. Zughar took his chance and readied his axe as he moved in front of the Gronn, staring into his one eye, "Look at you, the Mountain Gronn. One of the largest things in these lands, now subdued by us." Zughar raised his axe up on high ready strike, but a jolt of searing pain rushed over his body. The Gronn managed to break his bindings just enough to extend his neck and bite off Zughar's left leg.

The Orc stumbled forward, with his axe still raised in the air the momentum of fall embedded his axe in the Gronn's eye. Things were not looking good for Zughar. Using the same rage that helped him slay the beast the last time. He slashed away at the eye and the skull itself until it was surely dead.

The Warband quickly rushed over to see what happened to Zughar. The sight of this one-legged Orc slashing away at the Gronn got them riled up in a fit of joy. The War-band started shouting "Gronnbreaker." for the awe-inspiring sight. Luckily Zughar's brothers were smart enough to realize they need to stop their brother's bleeding. They quickly took care of it, before loading up the Gronn's head much the same to last time. They returned to the Stronghold. Here, impressed with Zughar's bravery, the woman swooned over him. He chose a woman by the name of Napna for a mate.

Zughar, while learning to offset his handicap of being one leg shy, raised family. He was blessed with a son and daughter. Zughar, who in his own opinion was a fairly skilled Worg Rider and with that he learned to make up for his leg in battle by letting his Worg be his legs. His Gronns slaying days weren't over, he just got distracted with his own family and learning to make up for his lack of a leg. This all changed with the Rise of the Horde, though. Although the Thunderlords were not a part of the Horde that slayed the Draenei, the Horde did need Ogre allies, and the Gronn were those who had what the Horde needed.

Zughar was approached by one of the green Orcs. While the Thunderlord Clan, en masse, did not join the new Horde, a few did. Zughar's skills with Gronn were needed to remove the necessary Gronn from the picture. And so, at the green Orc's urging, Zughar drank the blood of a Demon and took his war-band off to kill a Gronn. The Gronn they needed to kill was more powerful than what had come across previously, but the War-band had new weapons, new armors and were empowered by Fel. Plus, they knew where the Gronn was.

They found the where the Gronn was hiding and prepared for their assault on the Ogre Mound. In the dead of the night, they set the area around the Mound ablaze, forcing the Ogre's out to see what the noise was. One, by one the Ogres that tried to harm the War-band were cut down by the veteran Gronn hunting party. Eventually the Ogre Lord would show his face and he too was cut down, but this time from the mounted Worg-Riders, Zughar's oldest brother was one who took the glory for killing the Ogre Lord.

The Gronn finally made his appearance, moving his way down from the mountainside cliffs to face these green devils. With a smile Zughar turned his head and ordered the new catapult to fire. The machine worked wonders as chunks of rock flew at the Gronn. A very lucky shot managed to his the Gronn's hand can caused it to loose his grip, sending it tumbling down to the valley floor with a dull thud. The Gronn's fall even crushed any poor Orcs who weren't fast enough to get to safety in time. With the fall disorienting the Gronn, Zughar gave the order to attack. A volley of spears and arrows were launched and while some spears and arrows managed to draw blood the Gronn eventually stood up with fury in his single eye and started to attack the War-band. Zughar and his fellow Worg-riders finally charged in. The unmounted Orcs who weren't crushed by the falling Gronn were already unleashing their fury and rage against it, slashing their axes against the thick hide of the giant's feet and legs.

The Gronn retaliated, stomping down Orcs left and right with his massive, bleeding feet. Those where quick enough, survived. Zughar and his riders -fast- enough, using hit and run tactics against it. The catapult, operated by the second oldest of Zughar's brothers was finally ready to launch another volley of rocks at the Gronn. The shot connects, but it only manages to piss off the Gronn and charges the catapult. Zughar's eye widened, knowing that his brother could die here if he didn't get out of there in time. His Worg dashed over to the catapult as quickly as he could, just barely surviving against the Gronn's attempt to crush him with his feet.

The second oldest brother didn't leave once he saw the Gronn charge, no...he wanted a kill for himself so he loaded another volley of rocks to fire again. His chance for glory was cut short as he was pulled away from siege weapon by Zughar. Thanks to the War-band's use of arrows and spears, they managed to pull the Gronn's attention away from Zughar and his brother. This however was a bad thing, the Gronn was getting more and more angry by these Orcs and charged the group, slamming them into the ground under the weight of his fists and feet.

Zughar saw his War-band being decimated by the Gronn and he running out of options to find victory. He turned back to the catapult with his brother, "We must get that bastard off of them or we will all die here!" He shouted out to his brother. "He's gonna come back for us if you are going to do what I think you are going to do." Zughar didn't respond. His brother hopped off the Worg and made sure the catapult was still able to fire. It was, but the second-oldest brother still had to move the catapult. Zughar aided his brother in moving the catapult as best he could from his Worg, and they managed to get it positioned. They fired the rock and it hit the target, actually making the Gronn stumble from the force of the hit.

The Gronn stopped his slaughter after being pelted by the rocks again. He turned and charged the two brothers, "Brughar, prepare the oil. We only got one shot at this." Brughar quickly raced over to load barrels of oil into the catapult, but he lost his balance from the shaking ground caused by the Gronn's charge and dropped the barrels. Zughar raced over and helped load the barrels. The Gronn closed the distance and slammed his fists down onto the catapult, but the catapult still got the shot off, covering the Gronn in flammable oil. Zughar's lower half was crushed along with his Worg and brother. With his dying breath, Zughar grabbed his war-horn and blew into it, giving the surviving War-band members the signal to set the Gronn on fire.

Zughar died with a smile on his face, knowing another Gronn would die.

The War-band finished off the Gronn by setting it aflame, cheering at their victory. Vrughar took leadership after learning of his brother's deaths. He led the War-band to capture the Ogres that didn't initially come out of the mound to fight. Vrughar then took Zughar and Brughar's families and crossed the Dark Portal.

Zughar's story isn't over yet. After years of being a spirit he found that his grandniece, Sapna, started asking her ancestors what to do with her life. Him, along with the other ancestors told her to travel the world and they will be with her. Zughar watched his grandniece with interest, seeing how she interacted with people of Azeroth.

Eventually the Dark Portal would open again due to the events of the Burning Crusade. Sapna was drawn to the portal by the influence of her Ancestors. Zughar silently continued to watch his grandniece fight through the conflicts of the Outlands, judging her performance.

When Sapna eventually made her way to Oshu'gun, Zughar was convinced that this Orc was indeed strong and he was going to nurture that strength however he can so it could blossom into something great. He finally spoke to her again after all the time of silence and promised he would train her personally how to fight with her strength while other ancestors taught her other skills.

The training would continue like this until Sapna decided to leave. This didn't please Zughar. He made a deal with her, "You can leave, but I am coming with you. You still have much to learn and I'm not going to be remembered for not preparing my grand-niece for the future." While this was partly the truth, Zughar really wanted another chance to kill a Gronn. Zughar became Sapna's spirit companion, materializing into the plane of the living through the help of Sapna. He follows her now, aiding her in battle whenever she calls for him.
