Personality

Alignment: Lawful Evil

Varius appears reserved on the outside but performs his charge with a righteous zealotry that would make most Scarlet Crusaders blush. Honor, loyalty, and service are all things very important to him, even the slightest step out of line could result in being branded a incompetent not fit for service to the Queen. No action is too small when rooting out those that would seek to undermine the authority of Sylvanas.

History

Varius was born some 15 years prior to the start of the First War to a priest of Lordaeron and his seamstress of a wife. Though not from the lordly ranks, Cain's father was a very pious man and a patriot down to his core but always held a slight contempt for the nobles. These traits were passed down to Varius through his learning at home and at school. Though learned in the tenants of the Holy Light, Varius did not feel that continuing on to a seminary to train for priesthood suited him. So when he finally came of age, he marched right down to the recruiting office to join the military.

He was not an exceptional soldier by anyone's standards...though this was mostly due to what he began to perceive as a corrupt authority. Rumors would circulate that a certain officer would be promoted based on "donations" given by rather wealthy relatives of said officer. Varius and his squadmates were expressing their discontent to one another over rations one evening. Over the course of the next week each one of them was supposedly moved to a new regiment. They were actually brought in to their Captain's tent one at a time and interviewed to gauge their willingness and interest in actually making a difference.

Cain's turn finally came and he learned that among some of the lower ranks of commissioned officers there was a conspiracy to rid both the stat and military of those put in their position through illegal or immoral means. The dedication to the kingdom taught to him by his father shined through and he eagerly accepted. The loose group of officers and collaborators operated from that point on in secrecy, using ciphers to communicate orders or ideas to one another. They continued to operate up throughout the Second War, though with more impunity due to the fact that every man was needed at that time.

Those of the Order continued to operate throughout their careers and even into their lives beyond the military. When Varius felt his time as part of the army was up, chose not to reenlist and became a scribe to assist his now elderly father with his duties. This had not lasted but a few years before panicked rumors of cults and the undead rising from their graves started to make their way to the cities. He traveled the north with his father investigating the situation when it became apparent that these rumors were very real.

With small towns and villages being consumed evermore quickly, they made their way back to the capital in hopes of giving credence to the statements of others. Upon his return, Varius checked the usual alley for the coded messages. They warned of the cult within the city but it came too late. By the time some members of the cult had been identified and dealt with, Prince Arthas returned from the frozen north bringing only death with him. Cain was able to flee south in the chaos to fight another day.

Years later during an attempt to gain some ground in the north back, Varius and the company were slaughtered only to be brought back and made to fight for the traitor prince. As the killing continued his mind curled further in upon itself. Fragmenting the individual he used to be and leaving him in a dream-like state when he was finally freed at the battle of Light's Hope. In a moment of clarity, he wandered back to Lordaeron in hopes of slowly repairing the psychological scars.

Skills and Abilities

Mastery of Undeath- Varius almost completely disregards his blood and frost magics in favor of the unholy given to him by the servants of the Lich King, having gone so far as to painstakingly emblazon more runes onto his bracers and gauntlets.

Burn, Heretic!- Having found the burning fury of the Holy Light to be unsuitable for some tasks, he has acquired the knowledge required to safely make and store Alchemist's Fire.

There Are No Secrets- Varius has been taught the proper procedures of tracking, interrogation, and torture of those deemed criminals or enemies of the state.
