Appearance

Seraph is always clad in a heavy suit of platemail which covers every inch of his person. The armor is a dark green color with clouds of plague roiling over its surface. The pauldrons resemble horrific mouths, and his helm offers no clues as to his identity, though it seems to color the glow from his eyes a sickly green. Upon his back is a fearsome runeblade with seething green cracks down its blood groove.

Beneath the armor, the man's skin has darkened to a strangulated black shade. He isn't exceptionally muscular, and his expression seems to be locked in a state of constant non-emotion.

Personality

Seraph speaks quietly and intelligently when he chooses to do so. He tends to show disinterest in mundane topics, however, and focuses his energy exclusively on his philosophy of death. If he bothers to speak with someone, it is usually in the hopes of converting them to his cause, or simply convincing them not to struggle as he kills them. He is emotionally disengaged from just about everything; there are few exceptions, though those who heal others and perform resurrections appear to frustrate him moreso than any other group.

Seraph enjoys only one activity apart from killing, and that is reading. His favorite subjects seem to be history, geography, and books on non-human cultures. He is currently writing a large, unfinished tome which fully describes his philosophy. The book is as of yet untitled.

History

Seraph was born Sehran Varieloft to Lucien and Victoria Varieloft, a pair of nobles from the country of Gilneas. The varieloft family was wealthy and introverted, owning a large parcel of land and a manor from which they observed the labor of their indentured peasantry. Needless to say, the young Sehran never went without, and thus had an idyllic childhood. He spent most of his time studying under his mother. A quiet and intelligent woman, Victoria valued literature, art, and the sciences, taking care to impart her love of learning to her son.

Sehran's father had a more hands-off approach, showing his son only vague, distant affection. The boy thus became firmly attached to his mother, who did not mind at all the closeness she maintained with her soft-spoken child.

Three years into raising Sehran, his mother bore a second child: Another son, who would be named Lirael. Yet, whereas Sehran spent the majority of his youth in the family library, Lirael quickly became interested in fencing and music. He learned of these from his father, and so spent more time with Lucien. The older of the two brothers hardly cared- He enjoyed the peace that reading and tending to the library brought. Even as he reached his tenth birthday, Sehran still enjoyed poring over books with his mother. It was not until this point in time that a rift truly began to form between the Varieloft boys.

By the age of seven, Lirael began to distrust his mother. He was silent and angry in her presence. Sehran had heard shouts between his parents, arguments that began with a wave of yells and ended in terrible quiet. When Sehran asked about the fights, his mother forced a smile, saying, "I'll always be there, I promise. My smart little boy..."

This was not to be, however, as the events of a cold autumn night would result in Victoria Varieloft in chains, ripped from her slumber and dragged to the manor's courtyard. Sehran was forced from his sleep by the sound of a guard hurrying by his bedroom, and followed after to find a crowd gathered. His mother was to be executed.

There were whispers of an attack on the young Sir Lirael, of atrocities committed in the night. Sehran was frozen. He couldn't breathe. His mother was placed in the stocks of a guillotine, and Lord Varieloft spoke to the throng of blasphemy, of vile acts. Lirael stood behind his father, his eyes wide and fixed on the ground at his feet. Victoria searched for her older son. When her gray eyes met his, she silently whispered, "I love you, Sehran. I love you so much," before the executioner let loose the crescent-shaped blade and Sehran was forced to watch his mother die. It was instantaneous, bloody, and merciless. The crowd cheered.

The boy returned to his room, gathered his things, and brought them to the library. He sat there until morning and then began to read. The name of the book mattered not, nor the subject. He read until exhaustion dragged him into a dreamless sleep.

The next day, Lucien made a stilted attempt at explaining the situation, but found speaking to Sehran akin to lecturing a tombstone. The man knew nothing about raising his son. He could only assume that Sehran would someday grow out of the silence into someone he could have a mature discussion with. Lirael didn't bother.

Years passed, wars came and went, and Gilneas was sealed from the mainland of Lordaeron. Lucien Varieloft was remarried and had a third son, Sorael. These events meant nothing to Sehran. He had become a man obsessed with knowledge and death.

By the time he was twenty years old, several books were printed which bore his name. All theorized as to the true nature of the mortal world- From his perspective, it was a realm of suffering and gradual, inevitable decay. He described Azeroth as "a brief point of stabbing pain amid an otherwise dark and peaceful void." The books were almost universally banned for passages outright encouraging murder in the hopes of someday ending what he referred to as "the cycle of suffering". At least one Gilnean serial killer credited his inspiration to Sehran's works, which the nobleman refused to apologize for or refute.

Soon enough, the King's men were upon the door of the Varieloft's manor and showed to the library. By that point, he was gone, sailing away from Gilneas on a small ship he had commissioned with his father's gold. The same coins were used to pay for the services of a skeleton crew of drunken ex-sailors. To Sehran, there was nothing left to learn on the peninsula, and no books there that he hadn't already read. Lordaeron would be the destination of this craft, and it was there that Sehran would find the most promising weapon yet in his seemingly-endless mission: The undead plague.

Sehran and his crew traveled across the ruins of the great human kingdom, narrowly avoiding run-ins with its new inhabitants. The Scarlet Crusade claimed the life of one sailor, who took them for still-living allies in the woods. Sehran himself trusted no one, and thus remained relatively unharmed as the men made their way to what is now the Eastern Plaguelands.

Sehran had no intention of curing the plague, nor replicating it. He sought to learn. When his mercenary crew grew too afraid to venture East of the Thondroril River, he murdered the men in their sleep.

The nobleman ventured further into the diseased landscape until he crossed paths with a group of necromancers. He had studied the art of swordsmanship, but he rarely practiced. The ex-noble was quickly brought to defeat by their dark magics. Though they unknowingly denied Sehran his opportunity to experience the peace of which he had so often written, they offered him a chance to bring death to all of Azeroth. Sehran was reborn and forged into a soldier under the command of the Lich King.

The horrors he committed in this time would not be regretted. The Scarlet Crusade meant nothing to Sehran, nor the people living within Light's Hope. He briefly spoke with a Val'kyr on his philosophies, and the creature dubbed him 'Seraph,' referring to the Death Knight as an angel of compassion. The moniker remained with him even as he was released from the will of Arthas.

Following that moment, Seraph has traveled away from Lordaeron and Gilneas, moving to the lands of Stormwind. There would perhaps be new literature to take in, and certainly a kingdom full of people to murder. He was quickly drawn to the region of Duskwood and now remains there more often than not. That said, he is known to travel the world in his quest to end all life, and he seems perfectly content to do so one corpse at a time.
