Appearance

Usual Garments/Armor: When out of uniform, Nere'ija's feet are typically wrapped in linen. She dresses practically, and seems comfortable in whatever she wears, be it chain armor, leathers, or plain clothes. She takes care to cover her body fully whenever possible. She seems much less intimidating without the armor.

Other: Nere'ija's toned body is covered in scars, some of which are faded, while others have yet to heal. Silvered stretch marks line her stomach. Her accent is much lighter than it used to be.

Personality

Nere'ija pays attention to detail and likes to observe others from afar and up close. She especially enjoys watching others' fighting techniques, which makes her an excellent student and teacher.

Off duty, she behaves independent and aloof. Underneath, she's a vibrant and clever person, but tends to keep this under wraps unless she's in trusted company. She's slow to respect or trust, and any romantic entanglements are bound to be rocky. Her body tells a better story about her past than she ever will.

Nere'ija is virtually a different person on the job, by necessity more than anything. She is demanding and proud, and expects others to earn her respect the hard way. She's loathe to show weakness, and often has difficulty swallowing defeat or failure. Her fiery attitude and other emotions flare up during battles and their aftermath. A good way to get her to open up is to start a fistfight, friendly or otherwise.

She used to be quite spiritual, but no longer takes the same interest in the elements or the Loa. Her meager quarters have small flasks of mojo and fetishes from her tribe, though, so there must be something there. She seems especially interested in objects that represent water or come from the sea.

History

Nere'ija was born into a sprawling riverside village aligned with the Darkspear trolls. She grew up to be a vicious fighter, more at home crashing through the jungle than hiding in it. Her ruthless and cunning nature earned her a wide berth from the other trolls, and into her early 20's she remained fiercely independent.

Not everyone was put off by her brutal nature. When a local witch doctor was killed in battle, his young and charming apprentice, Laz'ashi, took over. He was respectful, intelligent, and had already been in Nere'ija's company for many years tending her wounds. So when he asked for her to become his second wife, she accepted. Believing in that so-called true love, however, was a mistake. Laz'ashi was no different than most trolls, and as a man of stature who quickly became successful, he was able to provide for his wives—his third, fourth, and fifth just as easily as the first two. She watched bitterly as younger, prettier, and more domestic trolls filled the house like bright-haired trophies.

Nere'ija took solace in training fresh blood as warriors, although her station prevented her from going out and seeing any real action. Her attitude as a combatant never wavered, but those who challenged her expected an easy fight from a witch's wife, and many came unprepared. She was banned from skirmishing after a brutal accident cost one of her promising pupils his life, though she's loathe to discuss the details.

After having her weapons taken from her, she grew distant from the other wives and the tribe as a whole. She performed her wifely duties mechanically and devoid of spirit, not a hint of the clever and ruthless warrior she'd once been. This went largely unnoticed by those around her, who were glad to see she'd settled down and fit into her role in society. By all means, she'd been broken . . . though rumor has it, late at night, she could be seen practicing alone in the training grounds.

Everything changed when the orcs discovered the Darkspears. Her village sailed along with the rest of the tribe, and Laz'ashi fell ill with an unknown disease. He died after 2 weeks at sea, traditional remedies unable to do anything but ease his pain. While Nere'ija and her fellow widows were in mourning, she couldn't help but eye the wicked steel blades and armor that the orcs had pilfered from the humans. To prevent herself from being married off to another troll, Nere'ija took up arms and joined the Horde army. As soon as she got her hands on a real weapon, it was like a floodgate had been opened, and the old, spirited Nere'ija broke through her docile shell. Her newfound independence brought back much of the fierce, cunning woman she'd once been, and that still shines through today, though she's still prone to moodiness and emotional distance.

She's earned her fair share of scars from the wars that followed. There are far more ways to fight than the tribal skirmishes she's used to, and so her tactics have become visibly more underhanded as she's learned to balance cunning and brute force in the field—though she still relies on the latter more than the former.

Nere'ija is no longer in active service. She finds the prejudices and vision of the new Warchief worrying, and she's resorted to mercenary work to keep herself afloat.
