History

Before Death

Mertice Gutwrench was a grumpy man in his living years, as well. He was married to a Gnome woman, Hellen. He had two children with her. Rodd, his eldest son and Gwen, his young daughter. Mert was an alchemist, selling his potions and ointments to the general populace to take care of his family. His life was going quite well, until his eldest son became ill and could no longer help him collect herbs for his potions.

Mert took some time off from his work to aid Hellen take care of Rodd. This was hard, as Gwen desired constant attention from her father. His children seldom saw him, as he worked around the clock in Stormwind, so Gwen wanted as much alone time with her father as she could get! Soon, Rodd's illness took an icy grip on him, his life ending.

The family of three left their house in Gnomeregan, as they could no longer pay their rent. They went to stay with Hellen's mother in Loch Modan. The grandmother despised Mert, though there was little he could do as of yet.

Mert left the house a few weeks later, traveling North to the Plaguelands in search of a flower which was indigenous to the region, Arthas' Tears. He was working on a potion which would be able to let the user change his physical appearance. This potion has been one of the main things on his mind for a month or two.

Mertice found what he was after, but at a terrible price. He was slain by a group of ghouls on his way out of the Plaguelands.

After Death

"Wh-where am I?" Mertice groaned as the chanting stopped.

"Leo! Get thisss maggot out of here!" A voice hissed.

Mert cracked his eyes open just as a ghoul grabbed him. It's icy touch made the Gnome gasp, he being pulled from the table and dragged down a corridor.

"Who are you..?" Mertice managed to mutter, his eyes fixated on the ghoul.

"-We- are the Scourge, whelp. And it is time you helped our cause." The abomination croaked.

"Help you? Never!" Mert struggled against the icy grip of the abomination to no prevail.

The abomination gave a sneer, turning to gaze at the Gnome as he continued to drag him along, "I don't think you'll have a choice." He muttered before turning to thrust a foot at Mert's face, knocking him unconscious.

Mertice groaned as he awoke, squinting out into the icy darkness around him. He sat up, noticing that he was wearing chainmail armor. A sword was at his side. A door opened, light flooding the room as it did, three ghouls walking forwards. Mertice stood up and looked between the three, rather confused at this point. The ghouls stopped and stepped to the side as an Orc stepped in, bound with chains, being led in by a Human.

Kill.. Kill... The voice echoed in his head, his hand going to his sword in an instant. The Gnome's eyes widened as he drew his sword. Though, it wasn't he who was doing the drawing. What's happening? What do they want with me? The Orc was a few feet infront of him now, looking down at him helplessly. Mert stepped forwards, sweat dripping from his brow from his attempt at resisting the unknown force. Mert struck out abruptly, rending the Orc's head from his shoulders in a quick slash. Kill. Or die. The voice echoed, the ghouls leaving and the doors closing once again.

Mertice spent the next few months slaughtering whom ever the Scourge wanted him to slaughter. He would fight the voices in his head as best he could, but nothing he did worked. This made him frustrated and fatigued him greatly, making it easier to control him.

At the Battle for Light's Hope, when Mert was freed from the Lich King's grasp, he was overwhelmed with a plethora of emotions. Though he was incredibly happy that he was freed, he also felt as if a part of him had been severed away from him. He was also worried and frightened of what was to come. He had to face his family.

Mertice cared not entirely for the Knights of the Ebon Blade. All he wanted to do was go back to his old life. He wanted to spend time with his daughter and wife again. Though, he would aid them whenever he could, as the others of his kind were most likely going through the same thing.

Mertice found continuing on with his old life nearly impossible, the screams and pleas of the people he slaughtered still fresh in his mind. The Gnome slipped into a deep depression, hiding himself from the world to channel his feelings into his potions and diseases.

He soon found a political party who were looking to help Elwynn and the surrounding areas. He was recruited and now works to help the people of Elwynn, looking to redeem himself. Though, the screams and pleas of the dead still haunt him wherever he goes.
