Personality

On the surface she seems kind and caring, and is pleasant to be around. She is very outgoing and social, and enjoys the company of other people. However, as any warlock would she has her secrets, which she is very careful not to let on to, not even with any very subtle hints. She does her best to mask her darker nature by keeping cool under pressure. It would be rare to find a moment where she acts cautious or apprehensive, and most would think she has absolutely nothing to hide. She has also on occasion faked compassion.

It's because of this that if some of associates are of an evil nature then she will often act clueless around them, as if they had never met. It's only in places of complete solitude, or locations like the Crypt, that she would let on to her darker nature.

Regarding the shadow she is curious, if not experimental with her warlock powers. While she takes care not to underestimate what she's working with she still finds herself pushing boundaries even as an apprentice. She doesn't seem to care too deeply who might get hurt in the process(but tries not to hurt any of her associates, lest she get kicked out of the Crypt), with the exception of one being her pet cat. Indeed, Mr. Snooks is her greatest weakness, if something ever happened to him she would be beyond devastated.

History

Layna was born an only child to a family that stayed rather tightly knit on the outskirts of Gnomeregan. Her cousins were her neighbors, and sporadically in family members they had exhibited the traits of extremely light skin, hair and eyes. Layna, however, was not the case, at least not to the same extreme as her other kin. She could bear the light, she was not a shut in, and she got to live a relatively normal life. She got to make many friends with the other gnomes, and even had a little gang that loved to tinker together on group projects. Like her father and the gnomes before she had become very devoted to technology and tinkering, and was very proud of her heritage.

As she got older she had become interested in magic, and started to study it deeply. With her mother's help she had learned how to control fire, which had become quite useful for energy and aided her in her technological pursuits. She had also eventually come to learn how to use arcane, however she was never deeply proficient with it. She found it to be a better way to power her inventions, which made her father proud. The fact that she could pull together magic and technology in her work made both her parents quite happy with her, and she found herself closely bonded to her family.

This happy time in her life came to an abrupt end when the troggs came to invade Gnomeregan. While her uncles, aunts and cousins had fled her parents stayed in good faith that High Tinker Mekkatorque's plan to gas out the troggs would work. For safety, however, Layna was sent off with one of her uncles while her parents kept an eye on their homes. With a big hug from her mother and father they had assured her everything would be alright and it wouldn't be long before she and her cousins could move back in.

That was the last memory she ever had of her family, and they were never seen again. Under the care of her uncle she grew to be a rather unruly, bitter and angsty teenager, and had a rather strong rebellious phase. As she was nearing adulthood that she decided to focus her anger and rage into her magic, and take it to the next level. Secretly she had started toying with shadow magic, and took the first steps to becoming a warlock. She wasn't stupid about it either. She knew well what would happen if she was found out. At the risk of becoming a suspicious misanthrope she had gradually forced herself to mature out of the angsty phase, and make herself more presentable to the public. While some might have been shocked that she had managed to “turn around,” others assumed it was simply part of her growing up. It had managed to come together so perfectly that she was, in fact, perceived as a normal mage, and having that reputation gave her good cover to continue her work.

A few years after adulthood she had moved out of her uncle's basement and decided to take up residence in Stormwind, which she assured to him was only a tram-ride away. In her going-away party she had many presents given to her by her family and friends. Among the presents was a small kitten she named Mr. Snooks, who she took with her in her travels to the human city. There she took her savings and money given to her by the Boltsy's, and bought herself a small residence there. Before she would resume her work, however, she had come to contemplate a way to keep her work out of Stormwind where she could practice safely.

She had come in touch with some other warlocks at The Slaughtered Lamb. They had spoke to her of Duskwood, and a place called “The Catacombs.” There she journeyed, in search of finding a haven for her dark magic to flourish.
