Personality

Laryn is heavily influenced by her runeblade. While she retains a semblance of her free will, time spent under the influence of the Lich King and her runeblade has driven her to madness. She is endlessly assaulted by her empathic link with her runeblade, and she constantly hears whispers on the very edge of her hearing, compelling her to commit acts of evil. She has all but given in to the nightmarish murmurs, doing whatever acts they wish her to commit. She is fairly well-behaved in cities and some more civilized areas, but in the wilds she knows no morality.

History

Laryn was a commander in the Alliance's military. She had been sent with a reasonable contingent of soldiers to investigate matters within the Eastern Plaguelands, but her force was overwhelmed by the Scourge in an ambush. She watched as warrior after warrior was slaughtered by the masses of undead, and cried out in horror as they were raised moments after hitting the ground. She fought to the very last, against fallen soldier and ghoul alike, praying to the Light for a swift end to her life.

The Cult of the Damned had observed Laryn's impressive skill in combat however, so she was not gifted with simple undeath as a ghoul or a zombie. Rather, she was taken to Northrend, where she, among many other noteworthy warriors of the Alliance and Horde, was raised as a death knight and entrusted with a runeblade. Laryn's runeblade was named Lachrymosa. As with all runeblades, Lachrymosa possessed a vague intelligence. As the Lich King broke Laryn's mind, Lachrymosa helped her become accustomed to her new life as a slave, whispering of how the Lich King would foster her and care for her in her new life. Laryn could not possibly withstand the cacophony of voices from her runeblade and her master, and it slowly drove her to madness.

Laryn and Lachrymosa were sent to Acherus among the other Knights of the Ebon Blade. Through Lachrymosa's influence, Laryn became fanatically devoted to the Lich King, believing him to be her one true master. Memories of her previous life drifted away. The voices of Lachrymosa assured Laryn that they meant nothing, and that they were lies. As far as Laryn was concerned, only the Lich King was fact.

Naturally, at the battle for Light's Hope Chapel, the sudden disconnection from the Lich King's will served only to fragment Laryn's psyche even more than previously. She could not understand how the Lich King would possibly betray her, and the other Knights, as they were his children, and he had cared for them for so long. Lachrymosa was similarly confused. The words of Tirion Fordring and Darion Mograine were meaningless to them. Reuniting with their master was the only goal that they could possibly see before them. Anyone who would try to stop them was merely an obstacle, and would need to be removed.

Laryn has since rejoined with the Knights of the Ebon Blade.
