Personality

Gunnar is a friendly sort of man, generally helpful to those he meets and polite almost to a fault. With most that he meets, he has a near compulsion to refer to them by their last name after a polite Mister or Miss, even if told to stop. He can break this habit with those that he's grown closer to, but otherwise his his natural urge to be polite takes over.

Given his upbringing, he's a man both of piety and of lawfulness. During dark moments of his life he's quick to resort to prayers under his breath, and has a strong belief in the Light that he wields. He expresses extreme hesitation to break the laws or rules of the place he finds himself, unless there is very good reason for doing so. He's also a brave, though not fearless, sort. While in tense situations he can be heard uttering his prayers to console himself, he'll step up and do what must be done when the chips are down.

While once loyal to the Alliance, Gunnar's faith in Stormwind has eroded as time went on. Finding himself growing fond of some people who are aligned with the Horde, Gunnar finds himself in a tense situation between balancing his personal desires and his duty to his people. Currently, he holds no firm loyalty to Stormwind and tends to judge people of both factions on their own merits, but he's also very careful to do his best to not let his sympathies towards certain Horde members become too publicly known in Stormwind.

History

Gunnar was a product of the chaos following the second war, one of many who lost their father in the fighting against the Horde. However, that was not the only parent he lost as a result of this. His mother, unable to support with the destruction of their home, left him on the steps of a small abbey. Who she was, what she did, or even her name, was entirely unknown to Gunnar. All he knew was that, in the end, he was abandoned.

That is not to say that he grew up sad and depressed. Raised by a priest who would give Gunnar is name (as well as share his last name with him,) he grew up under the watchful gaze of the church. He was fortunate to be found by one who would raise him as if he were his own, and so he grew with little doubt or concern about his lost parents that he never knew. That isn't to say that he never thought of it, but it was never a point of major concern to him. He had a father, and he eventually decided that was all that mattered. This did, however, leave him fairly stumped as to his exact age.

Given his upbringing, it seemed inevitable that he would also be a part of the church that raised him. Gunnar grew into a tall, strong young man, and as the third war raged in the north and west, he was instead training. The life of a priest was a waste for him, though, and he put his strength to use by training under the paladins, learning to use both the hammer and the Light at the same time. His politeness and dedication earned him his place among the armored warriors in time, and earned him few enemies. As he came of age, he completed his training and accepted the title of paladin, though found that he wanted to do more to help the people that raised him.

He got his chance by joining Stormwind's military, being assigned as a guard for the city. He was a skilled enough warrior to earn the position on that note, and his affinity for magic as a paladin made him a valuable addition as a healer for the guards. Accepting this role, he fell into a routine of helping the people of the city and keeping order. Yet, while he knew he was making a difference, the mundane nature of the job began to gnaw at him. It wasn't until a certain kidnapping occurred, where he was taken to a cave by Faceless, that he knew that he wouldn't be content to die with the life he'd led so far.

Then he met Kagrune, an orc that, while he was hesitant to deal with at first given the violent nature he'd heard about, he grew fond of. Time passed between his meeting Kagrune and the present, and now he's met Kagrune's son, in whom Gunnar sees the potential for something greater in his life, away from the streets of Stormwind.
