Personality

Darren is an efficient person, as such he doesn't do anything that doesn't fit his goals in one way or another. He tends to think things through and manipulate situations and people in whatever way seems to help him the most. He's usually very precise, following his own plan, so he tries not to say anything unnecessary. In short, he could be described as a cold professional, something brought upon him by undeath.

That doesn't, however, mean that he doesn't remember his past. He does, and he would like to feel things related to what had happened before, but he's unable to. So he suppresses any memories of feelings he might have, choosing to embrace the efficiency his situation has given him, instead.

History

Darren was born in a time of relative peace, in Lordaeron. His family wasn't anything fancy, nor were they poor. Because of that, he had a rather childish childhood and his parents did their best to make sure he and his siblings had as few worries as their situation permitted.

He was a sociable kid, becoming friends with many and perhaps enemies with more. Even though he had quite a few disagreements with his friends and potentially violent situations with those who didn't like him, he learned to talk his way out of most trouble. That was, until he got older and got to know someone who'd change his life. (And undeath.)

Young Darren, around 16 years of age at the time, fell for a local girl. She didn't seem to notice him when they passed one another, nor when Darren was fooling around with his friends. That just wouldn't do. So he tried time and time again to show off himself, but to no avail. He often got into serious trouble because of the crazy things he attempted and he was unable to simply speak himself out of them, because unlike previously he hadn't thought his actions through.

His life continued like that for a while and Darren was starting to get Desperate. Everyone else saw what he was doing, they even partially understood why he was acting like that, but the one he wished to be seen by didn't even look in his direction. Until, after an incredibly stupid and spectacular accident, Darren's parents had had enough of it. That was when the girl came to his rescue, as humiliating as it was for him. She explained oh-so-politely with flowing words that Darren had saved her from serious injuries and because of doing so, everything had turned sour. Partially because the truth was nothing even close to that, Darren was dumbstruck.

While one could hope for a happy ending right there, Darren's parents were still furious for all the insane stunts he had pulled off. And when they were finally certain about their source, they decided to cut it off. So, Darren was forbidden to talk to the one person he wanted, needed to talk to, to be with. Luckily, all the previous rule breaking had taught Darren how to do things unnoticed, unheard. He would often sneak out to secret meetings, occasional picnics and more.

Such secrecy didn't fit either of them, however. So they looked for a way out. Looked for means of escape, something that would let them be together, if far away from their previous home. Such a chance presented itself when The Plague and the undead happened. All the chaos would ensure that they could disappear without a trace, so the 19 year old Darren packed what little stuff he had and planned their escape to a morning not too far in the future. The wait was terrible, two more days, one more day, the next morning they were going to be free for good!

Darren didn't sleep that night, he simply stared at the ceiling until it was time to move. He grabbed his backpack and quietly walked out of his lifelong home. It was still early and only an occasional bird could be heard, everyone was sound asleep. So he got to the meeting place, and he waited. And waited. And waited, time passed awfully slowly, but eventually it was morning and several hours past the time they had decided on.

Just as he had gone to find out the reason, the village was besieged by the Scourge. He caught his love's fleeing maid and found out her family had fled for the southern shores in the middle of the night. Even Darren himself couldn't describe what he felt in that moment, probably because just as he felt them, a large sack of flesh hit him from behind and he suffocated.

There was blood, screams, killing, people. Strange people, even. His own people. But it all passed so quickly. Another battlefield, another slaughter. What seemed like minutes were really months, and then there was peace.

Darren looked at his dead self in confusion before noticing that there were hundreds more doing the same around him. They were all dead. Undead, but free. Even so, an odd fog was still over his mind. He felt slow, dizzy. Things happened around him that he wasn't quite sure of. Him and thousands of others like him rallied under a single banner. There was more fighting, they called themselves the Forsaken and once all that was over, the fog too lifted from his mind.

Darren was standing, in the Undercity, and he was deep in thought. He couldn't understand most of what was covered by the fog, so he focused instead on the last moment of clarity. His love and the mixed feelings. He tried to recall what he had felt, but there was nothing. He knew he had felt something and did his best to revive those feelings, but to no effect.

So he spent a while gathering himself, figuring out as much of the situation and his past as possible before setting a clear goal for himself. Find out what had happened. Why had she left without him? Where had she ended up? Was she dead too? Sitting around could answer none of those questions, so he left to scour everything that was left of Lordaeron.

On his way he had to end the lives of several people, both living and undead. He had to protect himself from wild beasts and bandits. But it didn't matter. It was something he did, had to do, there were no emotions involved. He spent several years looking everywhere north of the Thandol Span, and found nothing.

That hasn't, however, stopped him. Darren knows that he can't stop until he finds some proof of what has happened to the one person he changed his life for.
