Appearance

Calder’s angular features have, for the most part, survived the fall of both his body and his kingdom. There is of course the rot that comes with many years of undeath that has wracked his body with time, tugging at pieces of flesh and bone. His jaw is sharper now that much of the muscle from his face has long rotten away, and his cheek bones uncovered by flesh, seem to stick out further. Seared into his forehead, and the skull beneath, is the emblem of the Church of the Holy Light. Calder does little to hide this wound, rather presenting it is if a trophy of a long forgotten battle.

His shoulders are thin, and the muscles along his body seem to have fallen away much more than those of the average Forsaken, having no need of them with his chosen path. A slit is present within his chest, held closed by a small black thread sewn into the flesh therein. Upon its unraveling, the hole opens to reveal a bag full of miscellaneous items that the Forsaken stores within his unnecessary chest cavity. The contents depend on what is needed at any given time; At one point it may contain a hidden dagger, while another it would hold a batch of poisons or blight.

The Forsaken’s army also varies depending on the area he is residing in. He will attempt to blend in as best as possible when hunting a target, trying to disguise himself as a human or perhaps an elf if need be, for as long as possible. If this is simply not an option, he will maintain as inconspicuous a wardrobe as possible. This is of course thrown out the window once night falls, and his target has been brought into the Forsaken’s home court. He will wrap himself in black leathers to shield himself from view, a variety of blades held in black sheaths strapped against his person.

At the Forsaken’s waist almost always lies a dagger, the butt of its pommel inlaid with the Icon of Torment. The hilt, wrapped in the tattered remnants of a tabard of the Forsaken, is usually all that is visible of the weapon. The rest lies in a thin sheath, wicked and long. This particular weapon is only drawn when the life of a Light user is to be taken, and once it is drawn, a life must be smothered and forced into the spirit world.

Personality

Calder is of course, a zealous man. He fights for the Shadow, and for the Forsaken. This does not mean he is humorless however; No, his grim sense of humor is ever present, creeping into any and all conversations. This trait falls into his underlying hatred for all life; Not only that of the living, but of his own. Of what he has become.

History

Calder was born the son a farmer and his wife, the couple having a child young, having gotten betrothed even younger. As a child he was raised as any may be, being set day by day to the farm. To till the land, and to feed the cattle. To water the crops, and say his prayers. The prayers told to him however were seldom correct, the boy having little contact with the church far out on his farm. His only contact with the outside world was on market days, and with whatever families may rest about his own farm within the heartlands of Lordaeron.

On one of these farms, Calder met a young girl who grew with him into a woman, as he did a man. Following in his parents footsteps, he married young. He inherited the family farm, and set to creating a life for himself and his wife. It was during this time, in their far off, back country isolation, that the plague began to spread. It was not long until it fell on the men and women about his home, but he and his wife’s family were unaware of the happenings elsewhere in the world. They were unsure of what to make of the shambling mob heading for their farm as the undead neared, none on the plot having ever heard of the risen dead.

They learned quickly however.

The family fell fast to the wave of undead, one by one being torn into by the jaws of ghouls and abominations. Calder was raised into undeath that day, and brought into the ranks of the Scourge. He was helpless to stop himself as he killed his friends on other farms, and soon enough, his countrymen in other parts of Lordaeron. Areas he had never seen, and would never see again. At least, not the way they were then. Green. Lush. Living.

One day however, the strings tugging at his arms and legs, mind and soul, dropped. He was free of mind, but not of body. He was still stuck within the body of a walking corpse. A position that many others were also forced into, and soon enough, he banded together with small groups of the undead. And these small groups formed large bands. And these large bands would, at some time or another, become the Forsaken. In these early times of the Forsaken, Calder joined the Deathguard. He was not of much use, as he was not a particularly strong man, and he had no skill with a blade, but scout he did.

It was on one of these missions, that he and the undead that he was traveling with were fallen upon with maces and light. The fury of the Scarlet Crusade crushed down on them, and they were dragged back to a Scarlet base camp. The Scarlet Inquisitors were set upon the group, the wrath of the Light being seared into their flesh day and night. They were tortured for weeks, every last shred of information being peeled from them. The Scarlets seared the emblem of the Church of the Holy Light into each Forsaken’s forehead in preparation for their final executions. By a stroke of luck however, the fury of the undead was returned in kind to the Scarlets, Calder being saved by a priest who followed a new form of power. One that had not left them behind, like the Light had.

It was through this early priest of the Forgotten Shadow, that Calder began to learn from. And in time, as the sermons progressed, and the Forsaken’s skill with the blade grew, he was also called upon to serve in a new initiative. Its predecessor had failed, a group of Dark Knights who wielded the Shadow, but so far this group; The Lightslayers, had succeeded. Assassins fueled by their hatred of those who had wronged them, and of the Light which had left them behind with no guidance. Calder was more than happy to obey, studying ever more the tenants of the Forgotten Shadow, and the ways of the blade.

His first mark, after many months, was set. A Scarlet in charge of a small group of soldiers, set on causing the Forsaken as many problems as possible. It was an easy kill, and it set him upon the final path to being named an official Lightslayer of the Forsaken. From then on, Calder was set to his small chapel outside of the Undercity, and to his priest who would give him orders. From time to time he is called on to chase after a target, or to destroy an artifact, but he spends most days within the quiet presence of the church, practicing the shadowy rites taught there.

Skills and Abilities

Dark Faith: Trained in the tenants of the Forgotten Shadow, Calder is able to call on the shadow to augment not only his weapons, but to use it in his assassination attempts to teleport short distances, and perform other amazing feats.

The Dead of Night: Using dark magic, when in the shadow of an object the fully covers the Lightslayer, they can wrap themselves in shadow, making them near-invisible.

Snuffing out the Flame (Of life): Once more using magic, Calder can call on the shadow to suffocate any form of light. Flames are put out, and other forms of natural light are enveloped in shadow, giving the assassin a greater edge in battle.

Entering and Breaking: The Lightslayer can tip their weaponry with shadow-crafted poisons before entering combat. The poisons can cause limb paralysis or necrosis when an enemy is struck. They cannot coat their weapons during combat.
