Personality

Bartleby tries to be a good person but fails often. In most of his attempts to help others, his own cowardice ends up causing him to abandon his allies in order to preserve his own safety. Bartleby holds his own career with high regard and takes a great amount of offense to insults to his cooking. Otherwise, he remains rather level-headed except in situations of great stress. He acts polite and cordial, even to those he dislikes. He is obsessively neat and becomes increasingly distressed in filthy environments. When forced into combat, he will employ any underhanded technique he can think of in order to preserve his own life.

History

Bartleby was born to a prominent family in Gnomeregan. His parents were both brilliant scientists, his mother being a renowned tinker and his father an acclaimed alchemist. They hoped to condition their son to become a master of both trades and to revolutionize the world as they knew it. They did what they could to nurture young Bartleby but their dreams slowly died as they watched their son begin his academic career, finding him constantly lagging behind the rest of his classmates. In disappointment, they deemed him a failure and returned to their research.

As he grew older, Bartleby found himself a job in a local restaurant washing dishes for money to buy food as his parents refused to feed him. During the long hours he worked here, he befriended a particularly eccentric chef that taught him the science of food. Bartleby was fascinated by these ideas and began to refine his own skill, drawing out blueprints and plans for dishes just like as an engineer would for a new machine. The chef abruptly died and left the restaurant to Bartleby, his only true friend. Bartleby was terrified by this responsibility and quickly sold the property to a corporation which demolished it and erected a strip mall in its place. Wracked with the guilt of pawning his mentor's prized possession, the money was squandered on booze and Bartleby was reduced to a drunken vagrant.

Then came the Gnomeregan incident. Between troggs and radiation, Bartleby was too drunk to remember what happened. He awoke facedown in the Dun Morogh snow where he gathered his senses and fled to Ironforge. Once there, he slowly overcame his alcoholism, cleaned up his act, and set out to dominate the culinary world, though not without setbacks. Dwarves, being more concerned with drinking than eating, never fully appreciated Bartleby's work. During the time he cooked meals at a local inn, his efforts were met with little success.

Today, Bartleby seeks a new home that will finally recognize his work for its true greatness so that he may finally earn fame and riches beyond his wildest dreams.
