Appearance

Ambrose still wears the armour he was clad in as a death knight, his rune blade strapped to his back. He rarely removes his helmet, preferring to look as intimidating as possible. He is not particularly well built, having never been particularly active in his youth and only having really taken to combat after his death. He is often accompanied by a ghoul slave.

His face and form are lean, though in life he was well fed, thus his skin appears a little saggy, particularly evident in the bags under his blue glowing eyes. Since death he no longer cares about grooming and so his hair and beard are often unkempt.

Personality

  • Alignment: Lawful evil.

Ambrose believes that there is order in all things, predominantly imposed by strength and will. The strong dominate the weak, such is the way of both life and unlife. Those whom he can dominate are beneath him. Should he encounter those stronger or more willful than himself he is likely to either seek to serve them (should they be evil) or flee (one of the few remnants of his personality in life). He has little respect for the living unless they manage to impress him.

History

Ambrose Dunsany was the forth of four sons born to Edgar and Millace Dunsay of Stormwind. As was tradition within their family, the older son Tuomas went into public service with a goal of mayorhood, the second Nathaniel -always Ambrose's closest sibling- into the army and Bartholemue was apprenticed to a well-known merchant. This left Ambrose, somewhat the runt of the litter (family servants gossiped that perhaps the vitality of Millace's womb was spent by the time of her forth child's birth), at a loss as to what direction his life should take. In his schooling he exceeded at nothing and his parents became resigned that the older three would have to support the younger brother upon their own passing.

It took the coming of war to give the youngest Dunsany direction: as Nathaniel went off to war with the army of Stormwind against the undead scourge ravaging Lordaeron and the northern cities. Ambrose, who had spent the majority of his teen years wandering from one fruitless pursuit to another, surprised all by declaring he would join his brother in the march north. Lacking any training whatsoever he became Nathaniel's squire and the elder strived to teach all he could of swordplay and horsemanship to Ambrose on their journey.

Nathaniel soon proved himself upon the battlefield and saw himself recruited into the Argent Dawn. Not wanting to be separated from his younger brother (fearing he would be unable to defend himself) Nathaniel spoke of his sibling's prowess with a blade and, as fate would have it, the lie passed undetected and the brothers Dunsany became knights of the Dawn. However, his brother's teachings proved insufficient and Ambrose soon fell in combat against the Scourge, his last sight being that of seeing Nathaniel and his fellows beat a fighting retreat against overwhelming odds. This was an image which would stay, burned like a brand into his mind, beyond death...

A new life rather than oblivion, greeted Ambrose and he found himself raised as a death knight of Acherus, his will -weak ever since childhood- now forged and tempered by that of the Lich King. And his master's influence did not stop there, for he found he now commanded powers far greater than the rudimentary swordplay Nathaniel had taught him. This! This was power, he realized, and threw himself into serving the Lich King with abandon. With zeal he slew the warriors of the Scarlet Crusade, earning laurels amongst his new kin with each victory. Such power and such acclaim he had never felt in life. It was intoxicating. The only time he faltered was when ordered to execute captives by knight commander Plaguefist he found himself face to face once more with none other than his brother Nathaniel. The Argent Dawn warrior had, at last, been captured and recognizing Ambrose beseeched him to fight the Lich King's will. But Ambrose's tainted mind saw only his last living vision: that of his brother turning his back on him. What did he need his brother for? Nathaniel's teachings had been insufficient. Nathaniel had failed to save him. No, the Lich King was his master now, and the font of his new powers. Finally resolute, he slew his brother and did not turn back.

At the battle of Light's Hope Chapel the death knights had it revealed to them that their king has used them in order to draw out the paladin Highlord Darion Mograine. This was a turning point for all of their kind and saw the establishment of the Ebon Blade as a foe of their former master. Yet Ambrose saw the Lich King's actions as naught but the logical order of things: the powerful exercised their will to manipulate the weak, as the knights did with their ghoul servants. With the other knights he returned to Acherus, swearing as they did to fight the Scourge, whilst in his heart he felt the urge to return to it.

Initially he felt a great hollowness within him. Ironic that the return of his own will should bring such a feeling, and with time he came to realize that as in life he was once more the master of his own will, yet unlike his pathetic life he was now formidable. He now strives to exercise that power: with the fall of the Lich King he realizes that a return to the Scourge is truly impossible, but perhaps he can find other like minded souls with whom to bond...or dominate.
