History

Alaine was born into the minor noble family of the Thelwind, her parents were Douglas and Patricia Thelwind. She had a simple childhood of spoils and riches, at least until the illegitimate son of Lord Douglas were brought into the family.

Alaine was the youngest of three, her elder brothers being Johnathen and Edwin. Johnathen was a father’s child, he was an almost exact spitting image of Douglas, and he was groomed to be the head of the house. While Edwin was the family's bastard child, shamed to never get anywhere near the top. Alaine felt sorry for Edwin, as he was avoided by the other nobles, ignored by the majority of the family, and berated for talking to commoners. Alaine was Edwin's only... Friend as it was.

During a trip to the Market Square she saw a couple of men throwing books out of one of the stores. The owner of the shop had recently passed, and the family neither had the money to keep the shop going, or the space to keep all the books. On top of the pile of books was an old tome, ragged and stained. The cover was defaced and the bindings were falling apart. The book caught her attention and she grabbed it. The book turned out to be journal of a harvest witch that lived years before she did. The journal has details about the old ways, legends and tales, plus a few basic practices.

From then on she was interested in the Old Ways, but kept it a secret from the rest of the family, trying her hardest to find out about the Old Ways. She often took trips outside of the city to some of the towns searching for someone with knowledge. She was lead to a hermit in Blackwald. The hermit believed that the Old Ways might go extinct with the aggression of the Church of Holy Light, he offered to teach Alaine. The hermit taught Alaine the culture, the ideology, and many of the practices of the Old ways.

After weeks of teaching the Hermit decided Alaine was ready for some of the more risque 'arts'. He began to lecture more about the moon and the stars, the differences between the two. Eventually he just focused on the moon and the power that can be obtained from it. Eventually teaching her how to use this power in manipulative ways. Starting with small things, such as draining the life force from things like plants or rats, Illusions and some of the simple power words, and silence.

Edwin began to grow suspicious of her, as she would leave the estate for hours at a time, only to return exhausted. One day he followed her when she left, all the way to Blackwald. He crept about outside of the house listening to the teachings and the practice. Edwin was found out by the Hermit and was mind controlled into the hut. Edwin had heard enough of the Old Ways to be interested, less about the traditions and culture and more about the power. He wanted to be taught, and the Hermit was willing to teach.

The two trained for years and spent more time outside the city then they did inside it. The two never became masters, but they had power and practice. Eventually they had learned how to control and attack mind and body, create some illusions and steal the life from living things.

When Darius Crowley led his people in a rebellion, the two siblings took it as an opportunity to gain influence within the Gilnean House of Nobles. They would send off soldiers and money, use their powers to influence others, and in the end making their house look favorable. Much of the family’s wealth was used on the rebellion and many of their guards were lost. But their involvement and influence raised their house's position. No longer was it a minor noble house; while they were still far from the top, they were no longer considered barely above commoners.

Not too long after they gained new powers, Johnathen, the eldest brother, jumped off of one of the cliff sides of Temple's Reach for unknown reasons. His body was never recovered but he was considered dead. Since the eldest child was dead, the rights and titles to the house would go to Edwin.

When the Worgen began to attack the entirety of Gilneas, the two were returning from Blackwald, only hours from Gilneas City. The two were attacked by three worgen, the first threat they had ever encountered since learning their new abilities. Two of the beasts were mind controlled and were forced to slay the third. The siblings were cocky and used the two worgen to protect them for a short amount of time. When reapplying the spell, Edwin failed to control the beast and was bit, losing control of the worgen he previously controlled. Out of fear for his life, Edwin cast a spell that made the worgen flee in terror.

The two began to run, trying to make their way to Gilneas before they were attacked again. Only a few hours outside of the city, Edwin transformed into a feral beast, attacking Alaine. She was clawed and bit, but would not attack her half-brother. She cast a fear spell, which made Edwin flee. Alaine never made it back to the city before she turned.

She was cured like so many of her people, one of the first few to be successfully 'cured'. It was a disaster and she was barely able to cope with it. She went to Tal'doren with the rest of her people to achieve balance. When she arrived she found her brother, as well as a few other family members and friends.

When the gate fell and the Forsaken began to attack they hid, taking refuge with the others while waiting for the evacuation that would eventually come.
