Appearance

Varjot does not care for fashion, nor does he care for how protective or maneuverable his armor is. All he cares about is that it's comfortable, easy and quick to clean, and easy to repair. On occasion, for particularly grand battles, he'll adorn a set of shoulder-pads, but not much else is special about his attire beyond that.

Personality

Varjot is a hedonist in every sense of the word. "Happiness isn't good enough for me! I demand euphoria!" would be his war-cry. When not concerned about exerting his will over his immediate environment, Varjot savors the chance to indulge his every whim, and is seldom able to be convinced otherwise.

He isn't entirely selfish - he can frequently control himself for 'the sake of others'. But more often than not, he does this purely as a long term investment, figuring he'll be able to snag something out of the deal in the future. That being said, appealing to Varjot' hedonistic desires is a great way to keep him civil and under control. Though he will ultimately want for more.

Varjot's drive for gaining power and flaunting it has dwindled somewhat over the years, as his power and confidence grew. While easily distracted by the pleasure gained from his vices, Varjot is more than anything, at the mercy of a desire to avoid feeling helpless. If he is ever bested in anyway, or put in a position where he cannot or at least influence the outcome of something, he will abandon his pleasurable pursuits to be amass more power. It can be as simple as losing argument. As dire as losing control of a demon. Or even as tragic as watching something close to being considered a 'friend' die before him.

History

Varjot is born nine years before the opening of the Dark Portal. He was an insignificant child, unable to have any real impact on the world around him or the events unfolding with it. Varjot had always been burdened with a crushing sense of helplessness. The desire to escape it would be a central theme in his life. He was born a helpless babe, raised by an equally helpless mother. Varjot had only known his mother, Shre'ha, for four years of his life before she was murdered by Varjot's Aunt. The woman had lusted after Varjot's father, and had sought to get Shre'ha 'out of the picture'. She was disemboweled for her crime, but it was a meaningless gesture to Varjot, who would later look back on these events as the first sign that he had no power to influence the world around him. That had to change, or so the young orc thought.

Varjot's father was a Blackrock Warrior who reluctantly caved in to the demands of fatherhood and sacrificed many chances to advance within his clan so he may raise the boy. It left the man bitter, and interactions with his son were cold, though not cruel. Once Varjot seemed old enough to at least manage on his own, his father returned to his duties with gusto, the pair of them becoming more akin to room-mates than a father and son.

Varjot showed little enthusiasm for physical combat, and the like. Instead opting to look deeper into Orcish shamanism – even when the spirits had abandoned the older shaman, Varjot still soaked up with knowledge he could. It would inevitably lead him to his desire to become a full fledged warlock, and exert his will over forces that would give him the power to alter his fate as he pleased. He was still quite young, and new this was a pipe-dream. For now, all he could do was wait, and study.

With the opening of the Dark Portal, Varjot's father joined the Blackrock Clan in advancing into Azeroth, eager for glory. Varjot and his father spoke little before this, the older orc simply informing his still pre-adolescent son that he should tag along 'cause I said so'. With little for him to learn on his own on Draenor, Varjot did tag along with his father, hoping to perhaps learn from some warlocks who were joining the rest of the Orcish Horde in the war effort.

Warlocks were still largely inexperienced and fresh into their craft at the year of the Dark Portals opening, so Varjot ultimately managed to glimpse the most meager of details into the dark arts from the few who would humor him, the young orcs mind still too young and feeble to quite grasp the craft. The First War lasts roughly four years. During these years Varjot's contact with his father ultimately becomes non-existent. Each year, he grows a little smarter, stronger, and wise enough to gleam a bit more knowledge into the dark arts. When the First War finally reaches it's end, Varjot is entering his teenage years and has a minor grasp of warlock knowledge, though no magical ability.

With the death of Blackhand at the end of the First War, Varjot found himself following the sons of Blackhand into the Black Tooth Grin Clan. He had no real reason to do so – only going by a few stray words that his father was following the clan. Varjot never did find him.

Varjot enjoyed a few uninterrupted years of study and training with the few Warlocks who's attention he could grab or earn texts from. He remained with the members of the Black Tooth Grin Clan who establish themselves around the Dark Portal, ensuring it's continued protection. Varjot was in no rush to go out into more dangerous territory – he knew he wasn't prepared. His blood grew warm as reinforcements come through the Dark Portal in preparation for the Second War. Varjot delved further into his studies and summons his first demon. He became intoxicated by the growing power he felt. He desired more. His more aggressive research and practice is ultimately cut short, and Varjot is forced to put his talents to the test in defense of the Dark Portal from the Alliance of Lordaeron.

The orc showed great potential in combat, ruthlessly slaughtering his enemies, but it is a futile effort. The Alliance of Lordaeron ultimately overwhelms the forces of the Dark Portal, and the gate to Draenor is destroyed. With much of his clan annihilated, Varjot gathered what he can carry and ran off into the wilderness of the Eastern Kingdoms.

Varjot's time on his own was largely a battle against his own wits, a constant struggle to shrug off lethargy and apathy. He kept himself nose deep in his studies, growing bolder, but always cautious. He spent as much time fighting his desire to simply lay down and give up as he does fleeing from civilization, always cautious to avoid being thrown in with the rest of his lot - though in all honesty, he knew being a warlock, he'd more than likely be flat out killed.

On rare occasions he has the fortune to stumble upon small, ragtag groups of orcs barely managing to stay afloat in a world that wishes them incarcerated. His interactions with these groups are brief. He traded knowledge for resources, or sometimes, his services for...their services. Varjot found himself to be a bit of lecher as he matures.

Though far from noble, and mostly driven to obey his desire for power and to satisfy his vices, Varjot is not entirely malicious, only 'skimming off the top' of a groups resources when he met them, making sure to not leave them flat out destitute. On occasion he could barely manage to help small groups of orcs avoid capture with his skills, though he just as often had no choice but to cut them loose if they proved to be a liability for him.

After some years, Varjot caught wind of some rumor. Some wannabe hero of an orc was freeing his people, and seeks to find them a place in the world. Knowing he cannot 'eek it out' in the wilderness forever, Varjot is driven to join this growing group if only for his personal security. Though he was treated with great distrust and suspicion for it, he makes his past (and present) as a warlock known. He had no intention of giving that power up. Much to his chagrin, he accepted the harsh terms imposed on his kind in this New Horde, and goes along quietly, offering the Horde his services...though his loyalty to any group is as fragile as his dislike for any other one group.

Varjot yearns to do as he pleases, even if it is a fairly low-key existence. For now Varjot remains driven by a quest for knowledge and power, and indulging his own inner hedonist along the way.
