Once powerful, wealthy, and numerous, House Al'shar is a middle-class mercantile family that has experienced hard times in recent generations. In times past, they were a prominent family in quel'dorei society, but poor leadership and the destruction of Quel'Thalas at the hands of Arthas Menethil and his Scourge army have significantly ravaged both the family and its endeavors.

House Al'shar is used to refer to both the family who uses the name and the business organization headed by its members.

History

While not a member of any of the ruling families, in the past House Al'shar wielded significant power. It gained gained prestige during the aftermath of the Troll Wars nearly three thousand years prior due to the efforts of its progenitor. An enterprising individual, he helped establish many of the original trading lines with the Arathor kingdom following the war's successful conclusion. His efforts created a mercantile juggernaut with a clout that occasionally rivaled more powerful families.

In the centuries that followed, the house rose in prominence, due mostly to a succession of savvy and proficient leaders. This ended during the Second War when the then-patriarch of House Al'shar died choking on a fish bone. Leadership then fell to his younger brother, a dim-witted -- though well-intended -- individual. After a series of poor business investments and lavish social events, House Al'shar's financial future was no longer secure. Worse, having been filled to bursting with patriotic pride following the destruction of Quel'Thalas, he publicly backed prince Kael'Thas Sunstrider and continued to do so despite evidence that indicated that the heir of the Sunstrider throne didn't have his people's best interests at heart.

The once mighty house fell on hard times and, perhaps finally realizing that he was ill-suited for the position, he passed leadership of the crumbling enterprise to his eldest daughter and retired to raise pigs -- a task to which he was far better suited.

House Al'shar is now under the commanding grip of Piroska Al'shar, the stern eldest daughter of the household. Distraught by the actions of her father, she spends the vast majority of her time trying to restore the family to its former glory. Her efforts are constantly undermined by the machinations of her younger siblings, who have far less interest in the prosperity of the house than in their own amusements (often at House Al'shar's expense).
