Character Full Name: Calgar Harkov

Character In-Game Name: Calgar

Nickname(s): Cal

Association(s): Stormwind, House Harkov

Race: Human (Noble)

Class: Mage

Skills and Abilities:

Broad Horizons: Calgar knows how to cast a wide array of magic from several different schools and elements, due to extensive travel and learning. As a result however, he’s not as specialised into one particular school of magic as another could be. He would feel most at home with hydromancy due to his years with the Kul Tiras, but he never strove to master the school as there were more pressing concerns in war time.

Kul Tiras Veteran: Having sailed with the Kul Tiras for almost a decade, watching, being taught by and often filling in for captains, wounded or otherwise, leaves Calgar with enough knowledge to successfully steer and maintain a regular sized ship, as well as some experience in weathering storms using magic. Age: 53

Sex: Male

Hair: His hair is balding and coloured a rich grey.

Eyes: Blue

Weight: 109 kg

Height: 1.76m

Usual Garments/Armor: He wears a thick leather travelling hat and an assortment of comfortable cloth clothes, as well as lugging around a simple mages staff topped with a white crystal.

Other: He has a significant pot belly and lack of muscles, resembling a rather chubby man.

Alignment: Lawful Good

Personality: He fancies himself a generous soul and does his best to help people in need, although he’s not so dedicated to stop and listen to the story of every beggar in Stormwind. Honour in battles means little to him, but a promise is something he upholds to the end. He enjoys good food and wine like the next person, and, unlike some of his family, often fails to keep up an overly formal facade of mannerisms. That’s not to say he’s rude, though; quite the opposite.

Calgar is a generally cheery man who delights in telling stories of his past and having pleasant conversation with others. While he isn’t openly hostile towards them, he bears general distrust to the Horde in general, particularly orcs. He shares a deep bond with the rest of his family and respects their Knights and servants, but his thoughts drift evermore to the battle that the Argents fight.

History: Born in Stormwind at a rather uneventful time, Calgar grew up with his older brother and parents. His life as member of a rather prosperous house was not unusual; he studied a great deal of topics and the politics of the nation from an early age, with hired tutors and servants to cater to his needs. Books on magic seemed to draw him in the most, but this also wasn’t unusual, as the thought of changing the world with unseen powers was something that many children enjoyed. Unlike many children, however, this magical world shaping seemed to call to Calgar, and he was sent to Dalaran with a trusted family friend and the money to pay for tutelage at age 12.

His time at Dalaran was uneventful at best. For almost a decade he stayed in the magical city, taking in the teachings of his guardian for a few years- being still a child, there was much that was out of his grasp- before hiring tutors of specific branches of magic, mastering several basic spells from each school during his time. But the days of reading and studying wore on him, while old stories of adventure and travel, particularly by the seas, resubmerged in his mind. Thus it was that at age 20 he left the city and headed to Kul Tiras, where he hoped to satisfy both his magical curiosity and his wanderlust.

He was not disappointed. Upon his enlistment into the navy, they put Calgar as a trainee under an experienced team of hydromancers, who taught him how the arcane could be manipulated to summon water and change the form of waves. Calgar sailed often on these ships, even though it was peace time, working with his fellow hydromancers to calm the waves to any degree they could and provide trading ships safe passage. He was quick to find other mages on the island-state’s towns wherever they docked, and often exchanged some of his knowledge for the whispered secrets of a self-invented spell while he was off duty. During this time he also learnt the basics of steering and navigating a small vessel.

When the orcs invaded and the First War struck, Calgar, who was now more experienced at the art of water magic, was immediately thrown onto a small war ship, where he and another hydromancer were in charge of not only calming waters, but unleashing magical volleys at enemies. Over the course of the First War Calgar changed over many ships, due to either his prior ships destruction or to fill in as a hydromancer elsewhere. Oftentimes he was thrown onto the wheel to fill in for a wounded captain. The first time this happened, his vessel nearly sunk, but with aid from others and failure meaning death to dozens, Calgar quickly mastered these slightly larger vessels.

As the First War ended and Stormwind lay in ruins, Calgar met up with his House, most of who had fled the city. Once he determined they were alright, he returned to Kul Tiras for a relatively short respite before the Second War began and he was thrown into duty again. It was more of the same; slaying orcs, helping to maintain ships and using the arcane to combat the elements that the orcish shamans themselves called down. As this war ended, and the Kul Tiras separated themselves from the rest of the Lordaeron Alliance, Calgar returned to Dalaran, where he studied extensively until the Third War. During this lengthy time he grew old and the lean muscles of his sailing days began to wean and be replaced by the soft body he had this present day.

At the onset of the Third War, Calgar fled the magical city to return to his family in a rebuilt Stormwind, which proved fortunate as the city was destroyed soon after. He stayed in Stormwind for the entirety of the war, not nearly as active as he was in the past two wars. His wanderlust had deserted him completely, and he spent the war studying and acting only when a family member was in trouble. He helped his brothers son, Thaddeus, learn the ways of politics.

Sometime after the war, the noble House had the ingenious idea of walking to Booty Bay on foot, without their Knights. In hindsight Calgar should’ve objected, but he was happy to go with it at the time, some of his old wanderlust returning. Typically, they were attacked by a gang of bandits, and in the battle several family members died, including his brother. Although Calgar smote many with his arcane abilities, there were many more and the fight seemed lost in mere seconds, until they were rescued by their families Knights, who had decided to follow them anyhow. After the grand funeral, Calgar came to his brothers son and told him of his new duty, that it was his time to leave the house. He stayed for a month to help him get used to the task, before setting off again to satisfy his wanderlust, that seemed to have reappeared in his old age. Often leaving for months at a time then returning for a short while before setting off again, Calgar continued to stay in contact with the family, and full heartedly approved of the decision to support the Argents, donating much of his own retinue to the cause.
