Personality

Brego D'Anastasis is generally a genial and friendly (if occasionally overbearing) person, polite and articulate in conversation and usually kind and considerate in his actions. He does distrust orcs, trolls and undead however (especially when they appear in Dalaran or Quel'Thalas) whom he considers uncultured, overly aggressive and in the case of the latter, unnaturally existing - though he manages most of the time to politely conceal his opinion that the Horde races stay in their own lands. He has somewhat more time for tauren, partially because a select few are wise, intelligent, reserved and respectful of elven values, but also peculiarly due to the occasional tauren with a fine baritone singing voice. Though he fondly recalls the company of humans, gnomes (some of whom surprisingly make for impressive countertenors), dwarves and most of all high elves, he respects Silvermoon's opposition to the Alliance and is only truly comfortable to interact with them in his native Dalaran, preferring to be careful and otherwise avoid contact - and possible confrontation - elsewhere.

Despite his passionate and flamboyant nature, Brego can at times be careful and patient, able to be pushed quite far before he becomes enraged, though even then he is able to restrain himself somewhat, usually retaining his candor and politeness to avoid embarassing himself or causing damage. Though he avoids combat if at all possible, on the rare occasion he is forced to engage he truly (and sometimes literally) throws himself into it, though unfortunately his vigor doesn't always make up for his lack of skill: it is not the aggressive blood rage of a berserker, but rather a desperate attempt by an amateur combatant without a true love for fighting to gain the upper hand through attrition and sheer force of will. If his opponent is willing to submit, he will rarely hesitate to end combat immediately and with honor and mercy (and exhaustion!).

He is similarly talentless in a number of other practical spheres: though capable of looking after himself, he is a spectacularly awful cook and a hopeless magician, though he is at least an able healer due to his advanced studies in anatomy. Without a doubt, Brego finds far greater satisfaction in completing a composition or artwork or in directing, conducting or sometimes even performing a musical piece or a stage production. His ego is moderate in size, not all-consuming yet large enough to desire fame and wealth for his efforts. At times he can exhibit the traditional artistic trait of absent-mindedness, though not severely so - he manages to remain attentive during important discussions and can usually be relied on not to lose the plot.

His other great passion sometimes vies with his work to gain the forefront of his attention, and at others works alongside it in harmony: whether making love or making a work of art inspired by beauty, he is enthralled by the elven form. This does on occasion make him susceptable to manipulation by those more unscrupulous beautiful people, his judgement of character skewed somewhat by desire. He has also unfortunately sometimes been accused of entirely valuing aesthetics over substance, an accusation not entirely untrue but unfair considering his high esteem of inner beauty and his usual respect and friendliness to even those he would consider plain. Needless to say, love and desire can at times lead one down a dangerous and even forbidden path: Brego is no stranger to being somewhere he shouldn't be with someone he shouldn't even know. He is, however, on the most part a loyal and honest citizen - wherever he does not consider love or friendship to be above the law, he follows its direction obediently and faithfully.

History

The son of a Silvermoon diplomat and a Dalarani banker, Brego grew up with his twin sister Arial in the elven district of Dalaran. He lived in comfort, his parents taking great care and a large amount of time to make sure both children were brought up correctly, sending them to schools where they could discover and nurture their talents whilst at the same time keeping their egos in check through the occasional dose of tough love. Brego's parents were disappointed that Brego would not, like Ariel, follow in their footsteps, though realized Brego's mind was set and provided him with what he needed to study the arts. This he did for the greater part of a century under a great many tutors of different disciplines, and Brego reached adulthood a well-rounded and talented polymath. Though his artwork and musical compositions sold quite well and several of his plays (and even one opera) were staged, his career refused to truly take off and provide him with commissions from anyone of great note.

His work was still his passion however, and was central to his life (his family a slightly neglected second) and he produced a small number of operas, instrumental compositions, plays, sculptures and paintings in the short period before the First War. He traveled great distances (and slept on many floors) attempting to advance his career and learn from the masters, swiftly falling in love with Silvermoon, his father's city of birth, as well as the ancient tower of Karazhan which housed (in his opinion) the finest opera house in the Eastern Kingdoms. In his travels he learned several languages (which he put to good use in his operas, songs and plays) and forged lasting friendships with several of his contempories, including the celebrated Stormwind playwright Bill Shakesby (of 'Romulo and Julianne' fame) and the vastly talented dwarf sculptor Samul Strangehands. Despite his upbringing, he also got into more than a few scrapes with the parents of his several conquests...

Though unable to travel to the embattled continent of Azeroth during the First War he did not let up with his work or his traveling - in such rough times it was getting much more difficult to make any money at all. However, when in the Second War the Horde made its move on the Northern Kingdoms both he and his family thought it wise to withdraw from the dangerously exposed city of Dalaran to Silvermoon - which was as far away from the front lines as possible - until the war ended. The sheer scale and damage done by the war shocked the D'Anastasis family: by its end, Dalaran had been sacked and the Horde had almost managed to reach Silvermoon only to be turned at the eleventh hour. A number of fine paintings and statues by old masters of the arts had been destroyed in the course of the war, and he mourned their loss as much as he did the loss of a great number of countrymen and allies. His output slowed somewhat as he volunteered his wealth and knowledge of anatomy in the aftermath to help those wounded by the war, occasionally traveling to Thalassian field hospitals to help the wounded directly (and never willing to abandon his vocation, quite frequently making sketches of them in any spare time that he had).

As the Eastern Kingdoms recovered Brego swiftly and happily reverted to his life of art and love, dividing his time between Silvermoon and Dalaran, and though fame yet eluded him his work brought him far more than it had in the times of strife. However, if the Second War had merely shaken his life the coming of the Third War nearly fifteen years later put it on its head. The news of the conquest of Lordaeron and the subsequent invasion of Quel'Thalas - in which his elderly parents perished - frightened him to his core. Scared and worried, he traveled with Prince Kael'Thas and a number of other elves from Dalaran to the western shores of Quel'Thalas to aid the scattered refugees. Not long after, he recieved the news that Dalaran too had been all but annihilated and sank deep into mourning, the survival of his sister providing him with the only comfort.

The effects of magic withdrawal on Brego D'Anastasis were not so severe as on others due to his lifelong magical ineptitude, though the malaise still affected him. Now a 'blood elf', he coped as best he could over the course of the next few months and as in the Second War made efforts to use his anatomical knowledge to aid the priests and medics. Finally, with the return of Rommath and with the rebuilding of Silvermoon, he was once more able to recover his old vigor and love for life - though not nearly as quickly as he had after the previous war.

Recently, following the sin'dorei alliance with the Horde his sister has taken up a position as a delegate to Orgrimmar and offers her counsel to the strategists of the Hall of Legends. Brego himself has had to start anew, and still works as hard as ever out of love for his craft. As the lands of Lordaeron are slowly freed from the grip of the Scourge and the cities rebuilt, he longs to return to his old home of Dalaran, now free and whole once more... yet distinctly lacking enough of his work - yet!
