Other: Mathias has an athletic build, much like a typical human of his age, and appears to be a fit person. However, he is not as strong or fast as his body structure suggests, lacking the stamina for strenuous physical activity. Nonetheless, this lack in physical attributes is compensated for by his sharp and intelligent mind. He walks around with a slight swagger in his step, his actions exemplifying gracefulness.

Unlike most wizards and magicians, Mathias does not employ his staff solely as a magical conduit. Rather, he treats his staff as weapon, using it to defend himself in melee combat where possible. Thus, he handles his staff and wand with greater dexterity than would normally be exhibited by others. Still, he finds carrying a staff troublesome, and would only have one with him should he expect danger or during formal occasions, but would always have his wand with him. Always.

Personality

Mathias prefers to be by himself, but would gladly interact with another should they make the approach. He has a confident and charismatic personality, polite and sophisticated as if he were a noble, and slightly arrogant at times. He views the world as a force that requires balance, and would thus seek for equality in all things. He sees information as 'facts to be considered', not believing that any form of information is a lie or a truth until proven to be so. Even then, he would be skeptical, and question further. Something that would be regarded as an obvious lie would be treated as a possible truth, and vice versa.

This tendency to always be thinking and plotting out possible scenarios means that he is always prepared for anything. He always has a plan, and never does anything without one, organised in his methods. Highly intelligent, Mathias prefers to distance himself from getting too involved with those he deems as unintelligent, and this is what contributes to his arrogance. An eloquent man, he would always seek a diplomatic solution to any conflict, resorting to force, magical force, only when absolutely necessary.

Mathias has a dislike for the forsaken, since they remind him of the scourge which took his brother and father from him. Although not hating them, he would prefer to distance himself from the undead, and avoid contact where possible. He treats every other race equally, with a special liking for the Blood Elves for he understands their love of the arcane arts and are forever grateful for their decision to teach mankind all those years ago. He does not hate the Horde as much as other humans, for he once fought alongside them, and sees them as sentient creatures. He would not attack anyone unprovoked, for those are his beliefs.

History

The younger of two siblings, Mathias was born in the capital city Lordaeron to a middle class family, his father being a wizard in the military while his mother was a simple housewife. His parents were bound by love, and thus, family relations were often smooth and peaceful. Mathias had an enjoyable early childhood experience, but by the time he turned four, his parents had already started educating him. Mathias showed magical potential after a year or so, unlike his older brother who would eventually be trained as a warrior. Thus, Mathias was sent to Dalaran at a young age, where he would be schooled in the arcane arts, among others.

Despite being separated by his family, Mathias took to his education with enthusiasm, his curiosity the impetus of his desire for knowledge. He proved to be a bright student, understanding complex theories and absorbing a multitude of facts with ease throughout the time he spent in Dalaran. It was during this time as well that his potency in the arcane was made known, easily learning spells taught to him by his masters. He still knew the basics of frostfire spells, but was unable to toy and manipulate them as well as he did the arcane. His zeal for learning made him a favourite amongst his teachers, who would then give Mathias more attention in his studies.

He was allowed to return home to his family back in Lordaeron for a month every year, a break from his education. Mathias began to worry when rumours of the plague started to spread. His worry turned to anxiety when Stratholme and Andorhal fell to the scourge. He begged his father to relocate the family to Dalaran, but his father was insulted by the idea. Mathias saw the love his father had for the kingdom, and thus, probed no further. When news of Prince Arthas's victory in the north reached his ears, Mathias was overjoyed. He decided to spend his seventeenth birthday with his family that year, and coincidentally, it was during the time he was in Lordaeron that Prince Arthas returned. Mathias, along with his family, went to watch his return.

His world was perfect; until the truth had been revealed.

The betrayal of Arthas Menethil shattered more than just the faith and hopes of his people, but it shattered their bones and hearts as well. It was absolute carnage when the scourge invaded, for no one truly knew what to do. Mathias panicked and was at a loss, for the peace and comfort he had grown accustomed to all but evaporated in an instant. His brother and father fought to protect him and his mother. Despite all the training he had gone through, he was reduced to nothing when the time came to prove his worth. Shouts and screams were all Mathias could hear. It was only when his brother slapped him on the face and told him to run that he realised the gravity of the situation. Only when he was in relative safety did he realise that his father was not with them.

Mathias's older brother explained that their father had given his life to protect the family, and that it was his father's sacrifice which bought them time to escape. Mathias wept for his father, mortified that he didn't couldn't do anything. He was awed by his older brother who took charge of the situation, gathering other survivors in the vicinity to escape south. Everything moved so fast that day. First the reality of a prince's betrayal came to light, then, his father died, and as the day dragged on, they met with Jaina Proudmoore who was just about to leave for Kalimdor. His brother explained their situation, and as a last minute addition, the lot of them joined the fleet and set sail for Kalimdor.

During the voyage, Mathias spent much of his time in solitary meditation. When they arrived on Kalimdor, he promised to himself that he would never succumb to cowardice ever again, and would always do his best to rise to the challenge. Therefore, without the knowledge of his brother or mother, he enrolled in the military as a wizard, much like his father once was. He had to lie about his age, for the women and children were to be left behind while the soldiers and wizards set forth with Jaina Proudmoore to fight the Burning Legion. Mathias's brother understood his need to fight, but his mother was reluctant to let both her children go. Nevertheless, Mathias had to avenge his father, and so, he left with his brother for war.

The humans, under the leadership of Jaina Proudmoore, reluctantly accepted to ally themselves with the Orcs. Mathias knew little about the Orcs, but his first true battle was fought together with the Orcs, against the Orcs. The fight to cleans the soul of Grom Hellscream was tough, but in the end, the superiority of human strategists meant that casualties were not high. Mathias learned a lot about military tactics during that battle, and was relieved that both him and his brother lived. Soon after, the alliance of Orcs and Men met the Night Elves, a reclusive race. They then travelled to Mount Hyjal for the final battle. The battle to decide the fate of the world.

Mathias fought with an intensity unknown to him before that day. All he had learned came into use during the battle for Mount Hyjal. The Burning Legion relentless in their attacks, and the Humans doing all that they could to survive. Mathias was told that they were merely to hold the enemy back till the Elves were ready, but the time seemed to be forever. He accepted the fact that he would die that day, and that caused him to fight with an even greater ferocity, constantly calling on spells, draining himself beyond anything he had ever experienced. It was as if a knife had been plunged into his heart when he saw his brother die on the battlefield. Yet Mathias fought on, sweat mixing with his tears.

Magic strengthened by his anger.

He mourned for his brother after the battle. Mathias did not feel happy, for even though the Burning Legion had been defeated, he did not forget those who gave their lives for the cause. His survival was nothing more than miraculous. His mother, though saddened that she had lost a husband and a child, was overjoyed that Mathias survived. Although he swore himself to Jaina, he refused to attack the Orcs when ordered to do so by Daelin Proudmoore, for he did not see reason in Daelin's actions. He was sent to jail because of that, and was only acquitted of his charges by Jaina Proudmoore when her father had died fighting the Orcs.

He learned of Dalaran's destruction soon after his release, and pledged himself anew to The Alliance. He now travels to gain knowledge, learning all he can, doing what he can to aid the Alliance effort. With magic as his ally, he braves the new world.
