Appearance

Hajnal Guthhrafn is a stocky, hard-muscled dwarf, but surprisingly graceful for her stout build. Her face is full with close-set blue eyes, thin eyebrows, and high cheekbones. A smattering of freckles are on her cheeks. She possesses a bold, prominent nose that is upturned at the tip and a generous mouth. She has a deep voice and speaks in an abrupt manner.

The woman possesses thick, luxuriant grey hair in which she takes great pride; it is most often intricately woven and ends in a single, wrist-thick braid to her waist.

Personality

Having been freed of the Lich King's control, Hajnal attempts to regain some semblence of her past life by acting in ways that she believes that she would have behaved in the past. This has the tendency to result in exaggerated responses that can be more feigned than experienced. However, the dwarven woman is unfailingly warm and generous with her friends. Her affection is simple, straight-forward, and honest. If crossed, she is capable of making very strong and stubborn judgment against the person who crossed her. This may result in a deep and immediate dislike of that individual.

While very practical, Hajnal is not overly fond of structure or routine. Instead, she prefers to trust in her ability to improvise in any situation presented to her. She is independent and resourceful, choosing to live at the present moment rather than planning ahead. Hajnal can be extremely literal and concrete when communicating with others. She tends to say things in a very direct -- even abrupt -- manner, which can sometimes unintentionally seem quite harsh. She likes things to be communicated to her in a similar concrete fashion.

Though not a warrior in her former life, Hajnal seeks to quench the pain brought about her endless hunger to cause pain and kill through her work with The Regiment. It's her hope that a constructive outlet will help wean her from this remnant of the Lich King's control.

Skills and Abilities

Though having only rudimentary combat training and experience in life, her time spent as a thrall of the Lich King has significantly improved these skills. Hajnal is capable of holding her own and frequently trains in order to hone that martial prowess. She is particularly well-versed in the use of the short-handled war hammer, which is capable of being utilized in closer quarters and from bearback.

History

Born Hajnal Oakfist, Hajnal grew up at a time of great peace and prosperity for the Ironforge dwarves. Her family belonged to one of the many smaller clans that made up the Bronzebeard clan, though only on her mother's side; her father was a member of the Wildhammer clan who had come to Ironforge to live with his chosen bride.

The Explorers' League

Hajnal's earliest memories were of listening to members of the Explorers' League, who met in the Weary Boots Tavern in Ironforge near where she lived. She grew up surrounded by the tales of the Guild's exploits and witnessed with wide eyes the artifacts that they kept on sagging wooden shelves in their warehouse. While other children dreamed of carrying a blunderbuss into a battle or piloting a gyrocoptor, the young dwarf girl spent her days pretending to be an explorer in charge of an expedition tasked with charting unknown lands for the Guild.

Nearly thirty years after her birth, Hajnal was sent to live with her father's relatives at Aerie Peak for a period of time. The young woman viewed the trip as an opportunity to have her own adventure and she undertook the journey with great gusto. She spent the next three decades there and grew into womanhood while learning more about her kin to the north. In spending time with the Wildhammer clan, Hajnal gained a greater respect for nature than most Ironforge dwarves typically possess and came to embrace the bravery and wildness that is their way of life.

In time Hajnal returned to Ironforge and managed to acquire membership in the Explorers' League. She made her home the newly built Guildhall in Ironforge and spent her early days within the Guild honing her skills as one of their many prospectors. After some years she gained further responsibility within the organization as she was promoted to journeyman and, by the end of the Second War, she was a full-fledged explorer going on sanctioned expeditions.

In Northrend

Due to her experience and knowledge, Hajnal was one of the many Guild members tasked to join the final Bronzebeard expedition to Northrend. When their leader, Muradin Bronzebeard, was supposedly killed by the cursed blade Frostmourne, Hajnal joined the remainder of the expedition, now under the command of Baelgun Flamebeard, in going deeper into the frozen land to Icecrown Glacier. Hajnal survived the attacks made by the Faceless Ones following Illidan Stormrage's attempt to destroy the Frozen Throne, but died -- along with many of the remaining expedition members -- when Prince Arthas Menethil sought to enter the Inner Kingdom.

When Hajnal next awoke, she was thrall to the Lich King's will. She was judged to be an initiate worthy of undertaking the training to become a death knight, which she -- twisted as she was by the Lich King's constant presence and the words of his Scourge minions -- did with zeal. As a death knight, she assisted in the culling of the Scarlet Crusade from the Plaguelands. During the Battle for Light's Hope Chapel, Hajnal regained her freewill with the other death knights when the Lich King was weakened by the purified Ashbringer wielded by Tirion Fordring.

The Regiment

Freed from the will of the Lich King, Hajnal was suddenly bereft of purpose. While many of the other death knights chose to aid the Argent Crusade by joining the newly formed Ebon Blade, the dwarven woman felt no great desire to strike back at her former master. Therefore, she looked upon the invitation to help fellow death knight Thaim Wodanson recreate The Regiment as a blessing. Having taken a new surname in symbolic reference to her changed person, Hajnal eagerly joined her friend in this new task.
