Appearance

Usual Garments/Armor: Most of Rets’nis’ clothes often were either crudely sewn cloth he taught himself to make, discarded articles that were abandoned in rubbish, or were directly stolen from dead bodies. As he lacks a sense of fashion, the result of his pilfering and unrefined sewing would be a myriad of motleys, usually cloth.

Other: Rets’nis appears older than he really is, though it’s less to do with magical aging as what often happened for young orcs during the period of his birth and moreso due to the wear and tear from roughing out the wilderness of Outland.

Currently, he lacks a surname, as he has yet to obtain one at least formally.

Personality

One can interpret Rets’nis as either an uncouth, boorish manchild whose head must have been dropped when he was an infant, or as a self-centered, selfish, greedy thief who only wants to take what doesn’t belong to him and invade others’ personal spaces. In reality, Rets’nis isn’t (exactly) a dim-witted simpleton, nor is he a robber with malicious intent; he was simply responding to unfamiliar people and territory the only way he knew how—by studying firsthand. Throughout his life, Rets’nis had to teach himself to survive and understand his surroundings by observing and approaching up close, only staying a distance when the object of his curiosity presents an obvious threat (such as a demon or beast). The orc, a loner for most of his life, lacks tact, manners, any sense of cultural norm and conventions, and especially the concept of personal space. Nothing is sacred to Rets’nis as far as privacy goes—be it beards, shoes, eyeglasses, malformed fingers, a strange-looking nose, and a cherished weapon, the curious orc will reach to touch, poke, and prod to study. Simply telling Rets’nis what something is and how it works usually doesn’t do it for him; the unconventional orc has to experience the person, environment, object, and phenomena himself to truly understand it.

Unfortunately for anyone who has the patience to stick around Rets’nis for any extended period of time, Rets’nis has a short attention span and is prone to distractions very easily. He’s also a bit of a hoarder; as he was used to an environment where something as simple as shoes were a luxurious commodity, Rets’nis will save up anything and everything he could keep with intention to use the garbage somehow. Thankfully, Rets’nis is a resourceful individual—he can be very creative in using trash to make new, useful things, either for survival, comfort, or the relief of boredom.

When he was surviving Outland, all he could think about was simply that—surviving. Though he rarely ever had any constant companions, Rets’nis highly values the presence of others, even if these others don’t interact with him directly. Though he is far from shy, he is constantly afraid of how others think of him, often leading to him never make any attempts at deeper relationships. His aloofness is habitual at most; otherwise, he simply doesn’t understand people and his surroundings. Rets’nis isn’t a bad person per se, but his actions and disposition often give the impression that he is. Or at least that’s how he sees it. There are many things about Azeroth and its people that he hardly knows about, and worse of all, he’s fully aware he’s not doing a particularly good job at connecting with it. It’s just that he doesn’t know how to deal with it.

History

Rets’nis was born among the Shadowmoon Clan only but a couple years after the opening of the Dark Portal. By this point, the Shadow Council was already slain by Orgrim Doomhammer, and his family, most being attendants of the Council, had fled and returned to the Clan. Though they remained in service of the Horde, almost everyone of Rets’nis’ family—as well as other Shadowmoon Orcs—were killed as the planet Draenor exploded by the rifts of the attempted portals that destroyed the world. Despite being a child, Rets’nis was among those who survived the ordeal, though of his immediate family, he was the only survivor. He was not alone long, however, as eventually he would be found by two grown survivors of his people, eventually becoming his guardians and parental figures.

The confusion left by the destruction of Draenor had separated Rets’nis from most other the people for a time; by the time he and his guardians managed to find others, the survivors of the Shadowmoon Clan gathered to follow Magtheridon. While many rallied behind the pit lord, a few of the clan—Rets’nis among them—refused to follow a demon again. The surviving guardians took what they could and fled with Rets’nis to the treacherous remnants of Draenor, avoiding other orc villages in fear they would be found out and drawn in by Magtheridon. Rets’nis then grew up surviving the wilderness; however, his upbringing was aloof and neglectful, as the grownups were either often on their own or killed by some danger in the wrecked remains of the broken planet; thus, not one guardian stuck around long-term. As the boy passed from one guardian to another, he eventually developed independence on his own at a young age. By the time he was in his teens, his last short-term figurative parent had passed away. Rets’nis then relied on what he learned on his own to survive Outland.

As the adults in Rets’nis’ life were warlocks, Rets’nis himself became one. By the time the last of his parental figures perished, Rets’nis took upon himself to learn of the demons that plague his broken home. He would teach himself warlockery based on books left behind by his teachers, though as he was by himself, he’d resort to trial-and-error. No longer driven to simply survive, Rets’nis then gave himself the life goal in learning to overcome demons as well as control them. The years would pass as Rets’nis remained in hiding, learning to channel the fel, learn the curses that came with them, and remain disciplined so that he would not succumb to corruption.

To the young orc’s surprise, the Dark Portal would reopen. Armies of Azeroth came forward to fight against the Burning Legion, and Rets’nis would watch as both the Horde and Alliance would push the Legion back. Drawn by the friendlier faces, Rets’nis would find his way to Thrallmar in hopes to provide assistance in the efforts against the Burning Crusade and reintegrate with orc society. Despite lending his knowledge of the harsh lands and the demons, Rets’nis couldn’t conglomerate among orcs well at all—his inability to connect with anyone in even the most basic of social levels has put a strain on any attempts at starting friendships. Nevertheless, Rets’nis remained at Thrallmar, doing his best to learn what he could about the orcs in Azeroth—the camps, the liberation, the founding of Orgimmar and the new Horde. All this, however, was done entirely on his lonesome and done through reading; once more, he would be teaching himself what is needed to be learned.

Though Rets’nis stayed around Thrallmar in relative contentment by the time the campaigns ended, he did develop a curiosity towards the blue planet known as Azeroth; however, the world and its information as he learned of it was through hearsay was too intimidating even for an Outland survivalist. As he was too avoidant of daring to leave Outland, Rets’nis would simply ask for news from visitors who arrive at the peninsula. The decision to come to Azeroth at last was not made until a couple of years later, when he overheard a scout inform the Thrallmar grunts that Deathwing had shattered the world. Apparently, however, Azeroth had survived its ordeal. Rets’nis, now regretting he did not come to Azeroth sooner, decided to see the shattered blue planet itself, expecting to see broken horrors not unlike Outland.

To his surprise, and eventually fascination and intrigue, the planet was still relatively intact. Rets’nis eventually found his way to Stonard, and from there, he was guided by travelers to Orgrimmar. From there on, Rets’nis mingled among the Horde as he learned about Azeroth firsthand, though making friends and meeting with people face-to-face still proved to be greatly difficult. He wasn’t on Azeroth very long, however, when he was apparently spotted and invited to an interracial society for warlocks. This invite, as well as the society’s goals, has provided Rets’nis a greater incentive to try to connect with Azeroth and society in general. By far, his attempts have provided mixed to negative results, though Rets is now more determined to keep trying until he finds companions who could tolerate his lack of manners and behavior.

Will Azeroth be welcoming of this strange, intrusive, uncouth orc? He’ll wait and see.

Skills and Abilities

Though he directly obtained the very core basics of warlockery from his parental guardians from his youth, most of Rets’nis’ understanding of warlockery and the fel was entirely self-taught, primarily from reading tomes and observing other warlock orcs and the demons that plagued Outland. As such, most of his abilities lie in channeling felfire and casting afflictions and curses on his enemies, abilities which he is very well practiced in. However, as far as summoning, controlling, and using demon minions, his abilities are really lacking; Rets’nis could never come close enough to a demon to make a successful attempt at controlling it. In general, Rets’nis is very unrefined in his practice of the fel arts.

As Rets’nis was constantly on the move as he lived alone in the wilderness of Outland, the orc is capable of adapting quickly to his surroundings should he become familiar enough with it. A very resourceful individual who can make blankets out of dead grass and tents out of fallen machinery beams and cloth, Rets’nis can be creative with his surroundings and live off what scarce resources are available. Due to his experiences from enduring places from Hellfire Peninsula to Zangarmarsh and Nagrand to especially Shadowmoon Valley, Rets’nis is rarely intimidated by the dangers of hostile land and wildlife. People skills are what he’s really lacking in.
